I don't think shifting your auto box manually will do any damage so long as you're sensible. It won't change down if you're going too fast either.

I do it all the time. Box is in need of a service, but it's time for it anyway. (little slipping in a 4-2 kickdown)

If you're moving the shifter to 3,2 or 1 and getting no response when the vehicle speed is low enough for the selected gear to engage your inhibitor switch on the trans could be faulty.

when changing down the gears in the auto, say going back to second, if it don't click in straight away, tap the accel pedal .

Maybe a faulty/dirty gear selector switch. conscidering most users only go from P to D only. 1,2 and 3 never really get contact.

Down shifting like that can do damage to a stock gearbox too. I snapped a band doing it in my ea.

ha ha, i only found out recently that theres something v strange about my tranny. when i'm doing a low enough speed and down gear nothing happens. i go down a gear but the revs don't rise and the car don't slow down. its a pain because when i get a nob on my a*** i wanna down gear and see if his got the reflexes to match their arrogance but i find myself doing the same speed and dissapointed, i'll be getting a manual tranny soon so those nobs better watch out whos a*** they ride!

It shhouldn't be a problem so long as your not going phyco doing it. I wouldn't be downshifting to second when doing 3,000rpm in 4th or anything like that. But your ECU should stop it going down a gear if it's going so fast that it'd be dangerous.
But look at the sesquential shift auto gearboxs, they're set upt o simulate a ibit of manual type driving.

The electronic autos, won't do anything stupid, you could stick it in 1st @ 180KM/H, it wouldn't change back down through the gears until you we're going slow enough.

The old autos, that's a different matter.
