Hey guys I saw a simlilar thread on this before but it doesnt really explain how to get the plug out. This is the first time I have serviced my car since I have had it (only 6 months)....went to drain the oil and the fkn plug just spins...doesnt tighten or losen. the thread must be stripped but how the hell can I get the plug out!???

First things first, make sure you're turning it the right way! If so, then it may be wise to take it to someone who can remove it, and either repair, retap, or add a helicoil?

I have no problems retapping it and getting a bigger plug....I just need to know how to get the damn thing out...any ideas? Or do you know of anyone who could do this?

hmmmm, if you can stop it turning, drill out the centre, tap it, thread in a bolt, and then use a washer and a large piece of pipe as a puller, im sure youd be able to get it out.

One of my mates uses a little vacuum to get his oil out. He feeds the tube down the dipstick (so it goes to the very bottom... and also a skinny tube = greater vacuum velocity) and turns on the vacuum. Doesn't have to jack up the car & get to teh sump plug
This could be an option? I dunno where you'd buy one from... -Dave- |

Try drilling plug and screwing in a self tapper and pull on that while undoing plug? Other than that try fitting wire around washer and screwing it tight add wire for every half turn??? Or try a lever there like small screwdriver...
A good pair of vice grips and pull while you turn..Minds out the gutter...

The plug sounds stripped in a manner that the only threaded section is above the thread on your insert. The inserts are hardened steel as opposed to soft plugs. you can try locking vise grips on to the plug and with good outward pressure applied at the same time as turning carefully it may with patience find a start for the thread or alternatively weld a cheap T-bar to the plug .
On the other hand the insert may have separated in which case your stuffed. If worse comes to worse you can replace the sump without pulling the engine but you need to undo the mounts and chock the engine with 3" wood blocks, turn the crank as you go to clear counter weights and unbolt the oil pickup with the sump lowered. How energetic are you? |

Hmmm....bastards at the dealership who sold it to me take no responsibility - not surprised though...didnt expect them to. Ok well Im gunna try patiently on the weekend with the vice grips and see if I can get it to start anywhere on th thread. Ill let you guys know the outcome - I will definatly find a way to get it out without removing the sump dont you worry....
