I'll just have to see what can be done when I get it out. Can someone tell me why the BPT thermo kit uses a http://www.norcom.net.au/~bpt/Thermo%20Fan%20Kit.htm colder thermostat. They say it suits electric cooling. Why I've have heard of people screwing the thermo fan shroud into the top frame of the radiator core, If that helps. Don't know what BPT are on about, I've tried lower temp thermostats in the past and it just doesn't work.

I'm gonna try that today when I install them, I recon I can do it neatly and will look original. BTW; I tested them on the bench yesterday, they don't suck as much air as I thought they would Might have a look at these Volvo fans I've heard so much about... I just got mine mounted into my EA yesterday. Not cheap, but were EL ones, hooked up to run at different speeds under different loads, not come on until reaching A of 'normal', and as a safety precaution, should the thermatic switch fail it will turn on non-stop until its fixed.
HOWEVER, I bought an EL radiator to go into, and there was no way in hell it would fit into an EA. Completely different sizes, and there was some intermittant hose.

Yes been and done this.
EF/EL radiator has different hose sizes. Also the captive nuts on the ef/el are in the end tanks so if they are there the outlet sizes will be wrong. Use your ea rad when you offer the shroud up you will see that it only just catches on the bottom mounts. Make a couple of small brackets to hold it. At the top as someone has said bolt it to the top flange of the rad use clips for the self tappers dont self tap into the flange direct or they will work loose. I also cut the cold air inlet off my old shroud and mounted it with a bit of cutting to the top of the rad aswell. I personally dont like the idea of a coper tube being slipped into the top rad hose. E series have enough cooling troubles without making more. I used a kit from Jaycar "Simple voltage switch" $29-95 KC 5379 to control the fans. Picked up temp signal at the EEC and voila. All works very well and you dont have to get under the bonnet to adjust it. Mine fits in a box nect to the EEC in the lhs kick panel. My wife adjusted the setting whilst I was driving and using the EF?EL cluster diags to get accurate temp reading. Hope this gives you some help, PM me if you need some specific info etc Cheers

i have succsessfully mounted thermos to the radiator top frame, with no dramas so you can get around the captive nut situation, does the job just aswell imo

I did it today My EA now has EL thermo fans.
As I said before my radiator is a "hi-po brass tanked 3core" and didn't have the captive nuts. Don't let anyone tell you that EL fans wont fit a EA rad because they will. I had to trim one of the tabs on the right hand side of the shroud to clear the bottom rad hose. Also I had to remove the top passenger side shroud mounting bracket (with a standard EA 2core plastic rad you wouldn't have to do this). I went to the radiator specialist and got him to make two little slotted brackets for the bottom of the shroud to fit into, he brazed them on. He only charged $30 and did a very neat job. (I had to get him to do this or I would have voided my 2 year warranty on the radiator) He threw in a flush while he was at it . I moved the 2 screws that held the old shroud a bit further inwards and used a spacer between the new shroud and radiator frame. (you probably wouldn't have to do that with the std plastic rad because they are thinner/2core) The ignitition wire is hooked to the washer positive wire. I didn't have to cut the thread off that held the old clutch fan The top radiator hose has a leak where the probe goes in but I will attend to that tomorrow with a bit of silastic. I am very happy with the way it all turned out and it looks very professional if I do say so myself. If anyone has any questions I would be glad to help |

Sounds good. Ive been thinking of putting some on my ED, though i dont have a cooling problem, it seems to run fairly cold - according to the temp gauge in the dash anyway. Wouldn't mind getting away from the noisy clutch fan though.
Just 2 questions though. Did you get 2nd hand fans or new ones? do people think it would be ok just to get some from a wrecker/2nd hand as the new ones are pretty expensive. Secondly, is there any difference to the AU fans? would they fit?

They were $195 + $20 postage.Just 2 questions though. AU fans are similar but different and I'm pretty sure there would be a lot of cutting involved, and you would definitely have to trim the thread off your water pump. Go with the EL fans.
The total cost of the job including the switch, relays, coolant, etc was over $300. You might want to wait until your clutch fan starts playing up. It's much much quieter now, rev more freely and doesn't blow up any dust on dusty driveways. I think it was worth it |
