best way to clean your lifters but.
drain your oil (keep filter) put in 3 parts clean oil, 2 parts kero idle for 20mins DO NOT REV!! then drain again and put in new oil. thats how they do it to the ferraris and the maserattis.

I've done that with my lifters...been recommended by a few people.
Cleans them out really well, no more ticking. obviously if a seal is broken on them you got replace it or the seal by removing it. But why pull off your rocker assembly if you done have to?

I've heard a similar thing suggested using Diesel - the oil/kero mix sounds safer than Diesel tho. Actually spoke first hand to a guy who was into restoring and reselling old Landrovers and he absolutely swore by the Diesel method - he reckoned that engines that sounded and ran sick as buggery ie. noisy and blowing smoke etc. would come completely good after having the diesel treatment.

But why pull off your rocker assembly if you done have to? - those little plastic rings aren't actually seals - they're just retainers to hold the lifters themselves together when not in their bores and to keep them inside the bores when they are in place - only critical when the rockers are off the engine. I quite happily ran a full set of lifters completely without those retainers for a couple of years - tho I had to use bits of wire to hold the lifters in place when initially trying to refit the rocker assemblies to the head (ie. could remove the little wire retainers once the rocker units were bolted down).
