No you can leave the bar on, you do however need to remove the indicator, to do this you will find a small screw just under the bonnet near the top of the headight, once you remove it the indicator will slide out forwards.

Once the indicator is out look around the head light assembly for its mounting bolts remove all of these, sorry can't remember how many there are. Headlight should then come straight out through the front. Don't forget to unplug the wires from the back.

I found I had to bend my front bar (downwards) to get them out. The shape of them steps down almost an inch lower in behind the front bar than what is visable from the front so it's not just a matter of unscrewing the bolts and it sliding straight out.

yeah - despite what I have been told, I couldn't get my old lights off without removing the bar first.

I tried to get mine out without taking the bar off but they are really wedged in there. As hyena said the lights step down behind the bar. I tried bending the bar as far as I dared but it still wasnt even close.

Yeah I should have added that when I took mine out I didn't care if I cracked or scratched the front bar as it was getting replaced next - but it almost came down to that! From memory I put my knee on the bar and had to push down with all my weight to flex it enough to get the light out.
