So I don't see any reason why a 3.45 won't fit in a 3.08. I just went the complete rear end, cause I didn't want to hassel of changing centres. It was hard enough as is - I'm still sore. BTW: I'm loving the new 3.45LSD - great fun. Ive looked at the part numbers for 3 diffs. 3.45 LSD = 94dt-4005-AC 3.23 SS = 94da-4005-WB 3.08 SS = 94da-4005-CE

yeah, the part number for the complete unit is different, but the housing part numbers, and mould markings are the same.

in regards to your questions
3:08 diff requires you to machine shims and bearing cups to get any of the other ratios to fit where as the 3:23 and above diffs will accept any ratio within reason without having to machine shims or anything hope this helps |

Have you done this before? Im guessing that means you need swap the whole centers over. What machining is needed - do you just need to open things up for larger bearings / wider hemi?

The 3.45 wil not go into the 3.08, a 3.45 will go into a 3.23 and a 3.27 housing.
If you look at the main crown there is a number 0355 on the 3.08 gears. If you look at the main crown the other one has a number 0358 on the 3.23 and 3.27 and 3.44. These numbers relate to the housing size, they are not secret numbers from Lost hehehehe. Hope this clears up some things.

Hope this clears up some things. hmm, not really I have a 3.23 crownwheel in my hand now and there is no 0358 on it. There is 0578 stamped on (and other stuff as well), also 0578 cast into the hemi, and the same number stamped onto the pinion shaft. This center is out of an EF.

To add to this confusion, I looked at the housing for this 3.23 diff and it has 0578 on that as well. Im thinking that is good - the centers and the housing match up. Then I look at the housing on the 3.08 diff that is in my EF at the moment and it has the same 0578 in the same place.
Does this mean the 3.23 gears I have will fit in the 3.08 housing in the car atm? if so that would tend to suggest that 3.45 gears would also fit then.

As I said, from the outside, the housings (my original 3.08SS, and the 3.45LSD I just put in) have the same markings, and visually look identical, except the 3.08 isn't painted.

okay I got the numbers wrong but you get the idea, but dont be fooled because all the diff housings have that number, its the numbers on the main crown gear that tell what the diff is 0575 is 3.08 and 0578 is 3.23 to 3.45,

Interesting to read all that... so it's a clearance issue? is the crown bigger in diameter? What are the actual limitations of the 3.08 housings?
Cheers

The crown and pinion offset is different and visually it looks like the 3.45 main crown is larger
