Hey,

As you know I have blown up the 6 in my el fairmont and im thinking of either rebuilding it and modifiying it or....

One of my mates has an injected 5l in his garage I can have but it needs a rebuild.

My question is how hard is it to convert a 6 to an 8? What needs to be changed? I.e subframe?? And what happens with the computers?

If I put an el xr8 manual comp will everything still work i.e climate contol and trip computer?

Cause if I put the 5l in ill either use a c4 auto or do a manual conversion, not sure yet.

Any suggestions people? Id much rather the v8. So help regarding that would be better.

Squeak,
If you get the V8 eng mounts you will have no worries with either auto or manual boxes.
No need to change the front crossmember. The front springs will need to be changed.

Trip and climate will all be ok.

You will need the engine harness and ECU harness to suit the V8.

If you need more info, I have done a similar conversion to my EB, and as you are in Sydney too, we may be able to meet.

Chris

Thanks heaps man. Im pulling my engine and box out later this arvo.

One more question, what about the p/s and a/c. Do I have to get all the lines of a 5l to fit?

Isn't the auto transmission different for the V8?

The guts of the auto are the same however the bellhousing has a different bolt pattern and the output shaft is longer. Also, the auto V8 has a separate ecu whereas this is integrated into the EECV on the I6. What ECU are you planning on running - Manual EF XR8 or a 'tricked' EF Fairmont V8 ECU? Wonder if this would affect any of the other electronic rubbish in these cars.

Don't know about the EF/EL but in the EB/ED the ECU's are compatible with all the electronic wizardry. My EB XR8 manual ECU runs the high series dash just fine!

I spose the only thing that is gleaned from it is the fuel injector pulse for the trip computer and the coolant temp for the climate control.
