Hi Forum,
I have a ED V8 transmission thats going to get a freshen up .... also have been advised that my pressure control solenoid is on the way out .. Is there an upgraded version of this part? or a heavy duty one? Is the variable pressure one from an 'AU' transmission better? Any other tips would be appreciated. Cheers,

The AU is a common replacement for the variable pressure solenoid (S5). The AU version can be adjusted when the pan is off the BTR.
Check with your tranny guy to make sure it fits but this is most likely the best option. Even the standard ones are OK... i mean - yours would be at least 11 years old now, yes?

Hmmm .....
So am I to assume that the 'Pressure Control Solenoid' is in fact the S5 Solenoid? And therefore the Pressure Control Solenoid that is standard on my ED V8 is of a non-variable pressure type (a fixed pressure) and the newer AU one is a variable type? Sorry to be pedantic, just trying to make sence of it all. Cheers

Sorry to be pedantic, just trying to make sence of it all. Cheers No, i apologise - i did not make it very clear. All S5 solenoids are variable pressure - this is in fact their job. Depending on the current applied to the solenoid from the transmission control, it restricts or increases flow throughout the valve body and the transmission. The S5 regulates line pressure within the box. The difference with an AU one is that it is also manually adjustable (i think there is an adjustment screw on the solenoid) which allows you to control the base line pressure. For example, if you increase base line pressure on the AU solenoid, when the trans controller increases pressure even further, you end up with a very firm shift feel - compared to standard. Hope that makes a little more sense.

There are 2 types - manually adjustable (AU) and non adjustable (EB, ED, EF, EL etc.). It is the '5th' solenoid in the valve body, hence S5. In the workshop books it is usually referred to as the Variable Pressure Resistor (VPR) solenoid. S5 = VPR = pressure control solenoid.

Aghhhhh!!!
Excellent .. so now we are on the same wavelength .... So is the 'AU' spec S5 a true bolt in fit .....? Also, is it really an upgrade? Cheers,

Fuzion has/had an AU 6 cyl S5 solenoid in his EL 6 cylinder. If the AU V8 runs a BTR97LE transmission then yeah, it'd fit. I guess it's an upgrade, but really its nothing which cant be done with an electronic shift kit. See what the price difference is, i wouldnt pay any more for it.

Yes it is a bolt on item and well worth the money over the electronic kits. IMO they have a far better shift feel while retaining almost stock shifts during light throttle. Electronic kits are around $60 while the S5 is about $200 + install (but if you are doing a recon anyway) and as I said well worth the extra couple of hundred IMO.
