I've just put a T5 box into my EL taxi that's supposedly out of an EF falcon to replace the existing EA one because I wanted taller ratios.
Its fine to drive if you only use first, second, third and fourth gears. The problem lies in when you are in fifth gear and then want to use third or fourth. It just wont let you put it into gear no matter how hard you try, unless you go to second gear, release the clutch then change to third or fourth. Any ideas of what the problem could be and if I'd be able to fix it with usual home workshop tools? |

I'm after something much more definitive than "crook synchro's"
If it were worn synchro's then it wouldn't go into third from fourth gear but it does. If they're crook, how do they cause this problem? |

Well this is out of my Falcon workshop manual.
Problem Transmission is locked in one gear. It cannot be shifted out of that gear. CAUSE Internal shifter components worn or damaged ACTION Inspect the problem gear or gearshift rails and fork and synchronizer for wear and damage. CAUSE Selector arm finger broken ACTION Replace selector arm assembly CAUSE Bent shifter forks at pads and selector slot ACTION Service or replace as required

If it makes crunchy noises when trying to select the gear then it's worn syncro. Otherwise it definately sounds like stuffed linkage.
One other cause can be overfilled with oil but I doubt it. Generally the insides of gearboxes are not for the faint hearted. Some special tools needed. Most parts are simply replace only.
