Hey,
Last night my power steering pump dumped all of its oil. It wasn't like it was leaking over time. I went for a drive into town (about 5kms and everything was good, no noise, no smell. On the way home i started to get a noise, got a little smelly and smokey, made noises on turns and when i checked the power steering pump it was dry! I had a look around and thought that it either has to be the seals or the switch. I thought that it would be the switch as it let go all at once and not over time like a leak! What do you think? Switch or seal? I was looking on ebay to buy a switch and see: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4572023862 Are these puppies easy to replace? Cheers, Tim

Switch is the most common, undo the switch, quickly whack the new one before too much fluid loss, all done, top up have a nice day.

I sent an email to the guy selling the switch and he said:
If you have a leaks at the pump then the switch will not help. The switch is a simple screw out the old screw in the new type of set up, buts its on the rack not the pump Wondering what to do with it now :S Tim

the switch if leaking will drain the pump, it cant hurt to replace it, better then the cost of a new pump or a new rack to start with.

what you'll find is that is a comman ford problem and that most repco or like stores stock these switches (ford do to but $$$) cheap enough
you'll need a cut off spanner the right size to get into the tight space - a grinder to do this and don't use on of your good spanners, also you'll have to loosen off the spline nut on the steering coloum and move the coluom off to one side don't move your steering wheel about and you'll be able to put the coloum back on in the same way and your steering wheel will still be straight. I had a panel better friend who used to just mig up the hole on the end of the switch and bingo no more leaks he reckoned that the 200rpm that it used to bump the engine up when you turned the wheel at idle was a waste of time anyway. each to there own. |

they need the switch to mantain a good idle even when your not turning .also are the switchs the same in all the e series and au

I assume that they are the same accross the E-series and AU as that is what the guy is selling on ebay.

All good now!
Got that part from eBay...took about 2 days to get here. Removed the old, fitted the new...works perfectly....no drips at all. My mechanic down the road even gave me a Litre of fluid for free to top it up....what a champ. Thank for the help. Cheers, Tim

I think they were trying to say that the high pressure hose for the power steering was the reason for the leak. But as you have proved it was the switch as we all suspected, good to hear its sorted. So whose the d**k head now fairmont
