Hi Guys.
Just wondering exactly what this might be I just installed some old Focal FEH-1s in my EL, they are running off a jaycar 2x100w rms amp. With fairly large bass tones, the speakers cut out totally. At the moment, ive only done the passenger side, the drivers side is still runnng the standard premium speaker + tweeter. Its still using the factory wiring from back of the headunit to the door (ive run speaker cable from amp to behind headunit) Ive got a few ideas of what might be causing it, but wondering if anyone else has any others a) amp not supplying enough power b) speaker cable needs upgrading c) short somewhere causing speakers to cut out d) problem with the speaker itself. unfortuantely i cant find any specs on the speakers, so i have no idea what sort of power they require. Thanks guys - Dan

Well it's not gunna be either b) or d), that's a certainty. It's unlikely to be c) either as you said it only does it on bass notes, if it were a short it could do it whenever, not just on certain frequencies...
Possibly you amp going into protection for some reason (heating up too much due to poor ventilation, low ohms etc). That's all i can really think of. |

Perhaps a poor earth connection on the amp or headunit..
The headunit not being able to reproduce the voltage required for those large transient bass bursts and instead of going into clipping it simply stops the out put? What headunit is it?

Its that or the gauge of cable going to the amp might be too thin. This means that when the amp needs lots of current for bass tones, it can't supply it and goes into clipping.

Ive worked it out, its running too low resistance on the amp, causing cutout.
so ... time to bring out my old 2x50w rms amp, and run it all active

im looking forward to having it all run active.
lots of tuning capability, but i bet i spend more time tuning than actually enjoying the music.
