This morning I attempted to install a megasquirt ecu into my ED XR6 falcon. I connected the ecu as a piggyback controlling only fuel, with the existing EEC-IV running everything else.
Car started pretty much straight away with a fairly rough idle so I began tunning the megasquirt for a decent idle. This is when I noticed a bit of white smoke coming out of the exhaust which got worse and worse until I switched off the car. Worried that some of the megasquirt settings were wrong I then disconnected it and hooked the EEC-IV back up to normal. Now this is my problem; even with the standard ECU ruuning everything the car is still blowing heaps of white smoke. It will be fine for about 1minute and then gradually get worse & worse until I shut it off. The car was previously running pretty good and has had a full rebuild less than 10,000kms ago. The oil is still clean and the coolant level hasn't changed. When it is running it has a very rough idle and I can disconnect any one spark plug lead with no effect. Is it possible the coil, distributor cap or rotor could be causing all this white smoke or is it something much more serisous? I have also changed all the spark plugs. What does white smoke usually indicate and what could be causing this problem? |

Its definetly a white, maybe white-grey smoke and there is a small amount of water in the exhaust so I'd say its water causing the smoke. I just want to know how its getting in there as I'm not loosing any coolant and if I let it run for a few minutes it starts pumping out a s**t load of smoke!

Sounds like it might be just normal condensation as blackjack_original has already mentioned.
This is perfectly normal as a cold engine is started up and will disapear as the engine gets up to normal operating temperature. What if you took the car for a short drive to get the engine to operating temperature before adding the other ECU and see if it does the same thing. Cheers, Alan.

if engine sounds alright run it with ur chip and get the thing hot, if its still doing it then, see what the oxy sensor is doing.

Thanks Guys,
Got a mechanic friend over and he said its definitly burning oil. It doesn't make any smoke for the first few minutes when cold, its only once its warmed up. The engine seems to be running fine and could rev it out in netural but it filled my whole backyard with white/grey smoke. I'll probably pull the head off sometime this week to have a look. Air / fuel ratios are fine sitting around 11-12:1 and the compression checked fine as well. My mate reckons it must be a problem with the head like a leaking valve or something which sucks since its a near new AU head that was fully reconditioned 5000kms ago. |
