But what i'm thinking about is, would this turbo be good for "cheap" turbo setup.. ie not going near forged internals etc.. would it still provide a smallish power increase (and all those lovely turbo sounds + gadgets) while not thrashing the s**t out of my engine/gearbox/drivetrain.. |

also:
i've read in another post to "stay away" from garrett knock offs. The guys bringin the turbo into work tomorrow and is there any easy way to tell the difference between a knock off and a legit garrett (or whatever brand it is??) |

You seem keen to do it cheap so have a go, buy it, whack it on and see how it goes...
Sure it's way to small and without propper fuel/ignition managment you are limited to very low boost... but you already know all this so have fun, post up how it goes and a dyno print out |

guy at work trying to offload to me:
-- update its a garrett t04e 60 trim 0.63 A/R and has an internal wastegate. http://www.turbocalculator.com/map-t04e ... 060%20Trim tis on there.. it says 579 US$ i can get it for AU$300 or so? :\ what do yas reckon. oh and before you guys chime in and say how much it costs to turbocharge the ford i'm already aware of it. Thats a T3/4 with t3 turbine housing...
Too smal...Two would o/k... T04's generally have external gates.... The exception was the RX7 rotory...

In what respect would this be "too small"?
Too small that exhaust flow would be an issue or too small as in it'll be screamin its tits off ? Also what do these properties mean.. 60 trim 0.63 A/R And how do they differ to what would be "ok"? And when you say this is "too small" is it too small when a rising rate fuel reg (for now anyway) + standard drivetrain will be used? Whats the go with rising rate fuel regulators.. which rate would I need, where from, how much etc... -- edit And i'm sure its got the external gate because it has the thingy on the turbo on a bracket.. (photos i spose will show this when i get around to it) |

Well, too small yes and no... depends on your goal for this really.
A few poeple have used to3 and similar sized turbos on 4.o and 4.1 motors that I know of and have ridden in, both with similar results. What they ended up with was instant boost and full boost at around 3000rpm with power going off at 4000ish, and around the 150wkws mark. The reason for this sudden drop in power is the turbo's small ( too small ) exhaust housing which ends up choking the motor at higher revs. As you know, the exhaust gasses flow out of the head and into the turbo's exhast housing, so imagine all that air flowing out and then into a small confined area ( exhast housing ), its going to choke. This is why a small turbo will work ok on low revs, but up high its a total restriction that just kills power. Another thing with small turbo's is the temptation to turn the boost up to get more power, even at low volumes of air, to much pressure ( boost ) will detonate the motor. In regards to the wasteage... External w'gates are separate and mount on the exhaust manifold where as Internal w'gates are built into the exhaust housing and they have an actuator ( drum looking thing ) mounted on a bracket on the compressor housing. AR is a measurement in percentage of airflow that a housing will flow... it is NOT a measurment of size in regards to accual turbo size, wheel size is how you guage a turbo's size. P trim is a style of wheel... there are heaps of different wheel trims available. P trim is one of the more common |

A/R is area radius ratio...
Area of throat intake.. Radius of scroll in housing either comp or turbine.. Ratio between the two... Trim.. Turbine wheel trim can increase de-crease turbine pressure of a given housings A/R.... http://www.turbomustangs.com/turbotech/ ... mendations . .
