Since i got my gas tank installed, it has taken up quite a bit of my boot room, which means their is less room for all the audio gear i have to go in there. Problem # 1 is the two optima batteries which take up a fair bit of room and are awkward to find a spot for, and problem # 2 is they must also legally be externally vented to pass a roadworthy.
Solution?? They are going to be mounted underneath the car were the fuel tank used to be. Gave Vic roads a buzz and they say that aslong as there is enough ground clearance, that they are sheilded in some way and that they are properly secured, it will be fine. I will be looking into it a little further tho to be absolutely certain that it is legal, but from what i've heard so far, it's good to go Here's a pic of the rooom i have to work with... The batteries are sealed lead acid so they will be mounted sideways allowing more ground clearance Comments? Critisisms? Can anyone see any problems with this kind of setup?? Anyone had any problems legally with doing something similar?? |

the caps hav air holes at least my battery does. they are SLA's so they don't have holes! I would only be concerned about them getting punctured but I spose you would have em nice and cosy and secure... can't see a problem right now. Maybe you'll discover some later on.

dont quote me on this, but i have a feeling theres a reason to not mount batteries sideways, something to do with the chemical reaction taking place inside it.
its not as efficient or something, but yeh, im sure ive read it somewhere, but i could be totally on the wrong track. might be worth looking into tho

mm not a bad idea at all
mount em the right way up next to the spare wheel well, then get a boilermaker to make up a "dummy" drop tank to cover/protect the bateries and go over the spare wheel well will look smicko!

My bosses 39 Ford coupe has it mounted on its side in the boot. The only thing I can see is to watch out for heat from the exhaust.

Yeah any of dry or gel cell batteries of good quality can be mounted any way ... other types that are sealed can normally be mounted any way except upside down
The only worry there is yeah the out side extremeties heat from the exhaust and anything big u might accidentally run over

Cover the bottom with a steal/aluminium plate. would also help keeping them secure.
Nice idea, but I'm keeping petrol (for now at least).

How would they be accessable say if one dies and you need a jump or something? and just for the record you're sooo going to puncture one of them, and its gonna be piss funny when you do, lol, sorry but I just dont think its a good idea at all.

Sounds like an excellent Idea.
i am just eying off all that room for a duel exhaust from both sides at the back. and the lovely hole from the fuel pump that you could mount some audio gear in. DO IT!!!!! and GO THE FULL EXHAUST. Dual 2.5" - would be awsome with 5" Oval Tips on bothsides. identical bumper holes. |

Yeh thats a sweet idea. Lets all laugh at our mates when they go to all the work of relocating their battery and then they get punctured. With a decent protective cover theres no reason why they'll be damaged at all.

well a friend of mine his mum punctured her fuel tank while 'negotiating' a set of stairs, any way, get some descent gel cells, because they are a better quality, and no lead or acid needed, and ...*cough* aquire some sheet metal...ie street signs, and fabricate a bash plate for them , similar to the skid plates made for under car gas tanks, that shud keep ur precious juice safe
