sorry for asking for so many questions regarding the cooling system but i want to get it right first time!
when purging the air from cooling system do you guys do it with or without the coolant in? because i read somewhere you shouldnt run the engine at all without coolant. all help much appreciated thanks Kezz

Errr... it must be done with the coolant in it. Basically fill the system up, leave the cap off the header tank and run the engine for a bit. Air will make its way to the header tank and you'll see the bubbling. Then put more coolant in to bring back up to the correct level.
Dont ever run an engine for more than 30 seconds with no coolant. Especially not an inline 6.

also when filling up from empty. fill it full of coolant and squeese the top and bottom radiator pipes that will also get rid of most of the air bubbles. just keep squeezing until the bubbles stop coming out of the header tank

so i put in all 15 litres worth of coolant/water and then run the engine?

just fill it up so the header tank is at full, run it for abit, and top it up abit as air is released.

When you run it, you need to wait until the thermostat is open, you can tell it is open when water in the header tank is getting hot. That way you know you have full flow through the cooling system.

I also run the heater flat out till its up to temp, put the cap on then go for a thrash. Then check it

I think the manual says to disconnect the return heater hose and wait untill a constant flow of water from both ends and then reconnect and top up?

take that return hose to the reservior off the top of the thermostat housing as you fill up the system you will see the water bubble out of this hose showing air comming out of the head. Keep putting coolant in until this runs a constant stream then put the hose back on.
Shove a brick on the accelerator or somethin to hold 2000rpm and wait until it reaches operating temperature and the thermostat opens. Keep an eye on the water level and top up as required then put the cap on and you should be right.

That hose has one purpose to allow air to leave the thermostat housing and return to the header tank, as long as the header tank isn't over full and the cap is left off during the warmup procedure the hose can remain in place. I use a feeler gauge on the idle screw to increase the revs, more control than a brick.

ok this is what ive learnt so far
1)dont disconnect any hoses when purging the air? 2) leave surge tank cap off i also have some of that coolant concentrate where 1 litre makes 15 litres. how do i put it in? do i just chuck the coolant in then add distilled water or is there another way to make sure it all mixes properly?
