yesterday arvo when i was driving from work the engine was clackity clacking all the way home. scared the s**t outta me. sometimes it makes the noise in the morning but usually goes away quickly. is it an oil leak problem? there is some oil coming out under the rocker cover, but the dipstick still shows heaps of oil. any ideas?

Sounds like lifters or low oil pressure.

do you have an oil pressure guage or just an idiot light.

does it sound like just one or two lifters (problem only lifters) or all of them (low oil pressure)

what oil are u using? The weather is heating up and making oil thinner so you might want to go to a heavier oil like Penrite HPR50 or HPR50 depending on model and age of your car.

or someone may have slipped a flat 4 under the bonnet you can tell this by the car changing lanes by itsef in a cross wind or having to leave a window down so the dorr will shut

Yep will definately be the lifters (lash adjusters) I reckon.

One of mine died after a bit of rev limiter action a few weeks ago, and the car was tappin its a** off non-stop til I replaced it.
You can tell which one is probably dead, as that rocker arm might feel a bit loose.

Tip: Don't get your replacement lifters from ford, much cheaper...ummm...anywhere else.

excuse my ignorance but what are lifters and what do they do? if it doesn't make the noise ALL the time does it really need to be replaced? cheers guys.
