The only thing that I can think of after looking at the service manual, (apart from the new pump being faulty) is if it is properly aligned. In the wagon, it says to align the pump with the dimple in the fuel tank so the inlet outlet pipes are pointing horizontally. Is it like this?

fuel pumps generally make alot of noise when not getting enough fuel, when going to to much effort to suck fuel in (aligning), or if they are wired around the wrong way.. and ofcrouse, when they are about to die. How well is the car running? Missing? Flat spots?

Cheers

did you replace the fuel filters a s well. they may be clogged and making the pump work hard. what brand pump have you used?
