I was very surprised to read Incar entertainment magazine the other day and find some advice that had been given out by their technical expert.
The customer asked the question: I bought a pair of 6.5" splits and ditched the passive crossover to run fully active. I set the crossover on the amp at 90htz for the woofer and 120htz for the tweeter. The problem I have is I keep blowing the tweeters. I have blown 3 sets so far and the fourth are on their way out. The advice given was that you may get the same sound quality by utilising the passive crossover so that might be the way to go. He was told that the poly switch in the crossovers would protect the tweeters and by removing the crossovers (hence the poly switch) that was why thew tweeters were blowing. HELLO What about the fact that most tweeters are crossed over at 3,000hz or 4,000htz not 120htz. Even in a 3 way system most midrange drivers only play as low as 700htz. I’m surprised the tweeters even lasted 1second….. Morel Supremos play the lowest of any tweeter I have ever heard, or heard about, and even they are really only good down to 1,500htz at limited volumes. Lesson 1 - Don’t always believe everything you read 2 – A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Just because you’ve heard that running fully active sounds better don’t assume it does or in fact you know how to do it. Running fully active (or in fact any crossover setting) requires a good working knowledge of frequency responses and speakers. In many cases it also requires diagnostic and tunning tools such as RTA’s , oscilloscopes etc….

Whilst that is a very obvious mistake, it may have been a "typo" and he didn't mean 120Hz...

is there even an amp out there that can be set to play 12000htz+ frequancies. i thought that was the whole point of the criss over to filter out the lower freq's

Amplifiers can play any frequency you want. Its the speakers that are designed to play certain frequencies which is what all the fuss is about.

Yes i know i am running a 4 way ful;ly active system and semi active 4 way system in Lisa's car but all i'm saying is you ned to know what your doing to be able to set it up right and it's not really something for first timers unless they have assistance.

yeah i read that in incar as well. that write in Q&A part is a whole heap of crap if you ask me. i think its just a section to try and get you to use a CAM dealer. Honestly one of the guys wrote in and said that he has 4 type r 12" subs running off 3000wrms or so (i can't remember). then his mate has two subs running off half the power and the mates sounds way better. He then says the mate had his installed by a CAM and his, the guy with four subs, was installed by himself.
The response was that he should rebuild the box to suite the subs however you should really get a CAM to do thatfor you....pffft. |
