Hi,
I am wondering what is the best method of installing one?? I have a Apple G4 laptop that has a broken screen, and has been sitting in my wardrobe for 6 months, as I have a brand new laptop. I am also thinking of getting a 15-17 inch flat panel monitor to use in the car as the screen. Some questions: 1. Where would be the best place to mount the screen?? 2. Where is the best place to mount the laptop?? 3. What is the best way to power it?? Any help will be appreciated Chris

Where is the best place to mount the laptop?? Under passenger seat would be fine IMO. Quote: 3. What is the best way to power it??
Inverter would be fine for a lappy. Or get a regulated DC power supply... just get the laptop's specs. Probably something weird like 19v at 1a... d**k smiths carry adjustable power supplies for laptops.

hit ebay, you can pick up a car power supply for the laptop (and probly cheaper than DSE sell their universal one for)
under passenger side seat is good BUT you might wanna think about all the dust/fuzz thats gonna get inhaled by the laptops cooling fan. Ebay has a lot of good choices for smaller 7" - 8" LCD screens, some are even touchscreens, {DESCRIPTION} {DESCRIPTION} or without touchscreen, but still utilising a PC monitor input: {DESCRIPTION} expect to get gouged on postage if you order from honk kong though!

Ive ordered from electronicar on ebay who is based in hong kong. I thought $35 postage was reasonable... bastards in australia will flog you twice the postage that they spend anyways. One of the worst things about ebay IMO....

lol, yeh i hate it when you get a real bargain on ebay and then they decide that they wanted more money for the item so the gouge you the difference on postage.
nowdays i wont bid if postage isnt specified, (or if i havent asked first)

I agree that 15 inch is too big. But 7-8 inches is WAY too small. I am thinking of something in the range of 10-12 inches, prolly roof mounted. Does this sound like a wise move??

Yeah a roof mount would be nice. Dont dismiss a nice 8inch too quickly... unless you plan on writing essays in MS word or something?? Fine for media player, GPS etc etc

I've actually been considering a rather ambitious approach in this area...
I first considered mounting it just above the glove compartment so it would slide out on a rail, but realised that if the laptop tray was open when an accident occurred, the passenger side airbag would cause some serious flying debris straight into the passenger. So, my next best option is to disassemble the laptop screen, invert the LCD itself in its housing so it can be mounted from the roof, swinging down for viewing, and as for the actual computer components, i'm not sure where i'd put them. Perhaps also in the roof if i managed to make a complete concealed rigid shelf to house it in so it all looked tidy... this would have the bonus of having all the connections for the screen close by so i wouldn't have to run excessive wiring. As for the keyboard/touchpad, i'd mount these above the glove box since they wouldn't fold up into the path of the airbag, only recede into the dash.

What would your thoughts be on:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/BelCanto-15-ROOF ... dZViewItem or http://cgi.ebay.com.au/BelCanto-13-ROOF ... dZViewItem I am leaning twoards the 15 inch, because it will look better. Would it be wiser to mount it infront or behind the interior light?? Is this good Value for money?? Has anyone heard of this brand or their reputation?? Cheers Chris

or...you can do what i am going to do when i get around to it. Use the laptop / or pc, mount in boot, run a touchscreen upfront and bobs your uncle, now the beauty with car batteries is its all dc, so dont worry about inverters , you can get dc stepups and stepdowns for pcs to run off a 12v line for in car use, now isnt that a much nicer option, you then will only have 2 cables in your car, one for the screen and one for the usb for the touch screen ability.
