Hrmmm, I have a new water pump and I was getting sqeauling issues even with a new belt. I think it's due to bad adjustment though as the alternator bracket is rooted - at least I hope it is. I'll be p****d if it's the pump.
I only get a minor sqeal for half a second during startup now - and I'll be happy if it stays that way.

i know its a little late for this topice. but id be looking at idle pulleys. My ED had an awful squeal and it was the A/C idle pulley. The pulleys on the tensioners on the EF/L's are quite common for the bearings to go in them

I hope you dont mind me hijacking your post, but your problem sounds very much like one I'm having at the moment. I've got an EBII Fairmont and lately when started from cold, the voltmeter sits between 11 and 12 volts with the engine idling. It doesnt indicate a charge until the car is being driven. When the vehicle speed increases, the battery starts charging, and thats when the squeal starts. It continues until the voltage reaches 14 then it stops and everything is nice and quiet again. Does this sound like a belt or a dodgy alternator/brushes/bearings? And if it is the alternator, can anyone give me a rough estimate of what it'll cost to repair? Any and all idea are very welcome
Thanks a lot

replace the idler pulleys i would have done that first, its a bracket that scres in the block has 3 long bolts 10mm from memory.
but as someone else said its prob the bearings in those, i took mine off and the bearing wernt great put a bit of crc in that helped it a bit.

That's just a under tensioned alternator belt.

Get a new one and make sure it's tight when you put it on. If you don't fix it soon, it'll snap. I know. I broke one a few months back on another car in teh middle of the black spur here in vic. I limped it to a service station who had a selection of 2 belts. Luckily one of them fit.

if the fluid is red then i wouldnt worry about it but if its a yellowy colour then yes deffinaly change it

Factory spec for a EL is Mobilfluid 424, its equivilant in castrol is SYNTRANS 75W/85 which is yellow when new. So seeing yellow fluid in an EL can be normal.

Thanks Rapier for your suggestion, however as earlier mentioned i had already replaced the idler pulleys as my first step to sorting this out...

now, with the power steering pump replaced, i have spent close to $500 and still have the squeal!!

anything else u can think of??.

i'm tempted to go to Ford, however i don't want to be ripped off...

Btw, Rapier nice looking XR.. i like the dash job!!

just because its a new belt dosen't mean it was tensioned correctly. Or like it was said before could be power steering pulley. mine made the same noise but only on full lock all i did was tension the v belt
