Ok, I'm putting my EF engine back together and I'm at the part of reinstalling the cam synchronizers thingy (the thing they replaced the dizzy with on the EF and AU's).
I'd imaging that it has to go back in the correct way, similar to a dizzy. Has anyone taken these out and replaced them before? Cheers |

hmmm i know mine broke and f**k my engine, so make sure u get it the right way, sorry im not sure how it goes in my workshop book doesnt say anything on it, an original ford book prob will tho

do u know the exact name of this part, that would help for a start, if its timing related, it probably should have marks, or u should have marked it before removal....but after we establish what it is we can go from there...

he is talking about the dizzy replacement, um, cam sensor, VR sensor, what else do they get called? They sit in where the dizzy would normally.
I'd also assume that they way you get it back in is critical... TDC must be aligned. Cheers

The AU does not have a sensor there, it is actually just the Oil pump drive in the AU, the cam sensor is on the timing case. To align it , what you need to do is locate the motor to Cylinder 1 TDC on power stroke, pull the cover off the sensor and align it so that the arc just starts to enter the sensor. I don't think it is critical, it is only used to detect power stroke from exhaust stroke.

YES IAM DOING MINE UP AS WE ARE WRITING ON THE CAM ANGLE SENCER THERE IS A SMALL HOLE ON THE SIDE OF IT PUT A SMALL DRILL BIT IN IT TURN THE KOG UNTIL THE DILL BIT GOES ALL THE WAY IN . WHEN YOU HAVE DONE THAT IT IS TDC. ON THE CAM ANGLE SENCER .THAN GET THE MOTOR ON TDC AND THAN IT SHOULD BE OK.

On the EF, the thing that replaced the dissy is the cam sensor and it gives the ecu an indication of the cam phase, that is, if it is on a compression/power or exhaust/induction stroke.
It is the crank angle sensor which is on the front of the engine just above the crank pully that tells the ecu what angle the crank is at and when to fire the spark plugs (pitty this was not designed to be moved left/right so that base timing was easier to adjust). Since the I6 is a 4 stroke engine, you need to ensure that the #1 piston is at Top Dead Center and that both the exhaust and inlet valves are closed as this is roughly when the ecu would fire #1 spark plug for its power stroke. Just remember, to take #1 from TDC on the power stroke to TDC on the power stroke takes two engine revolutions With the engine in this arangement (#1 @ TDC power stroke), the cam sensor should slot into the hole assuming the cam sensor is positioned correctly. To do this turn the cam sensor cog while pushing a drill bit into the cam sensor side and when it goes in, the sensor is ready to put into the old dissy hole.
