Will find out if a real neon will work on 12v curcuit as jaycar have one (90v ne2 neon).
No spec on size. Spike voltage 82v. To run it on 240v they say to use 270k resistor in series. These are only 45 cents each.
Disreguard these 90v ne2 neon as will not suit as 6mm dia by 16.1mm length and voltage range can't be achieved or reduced. Suggested to sand top of led flat. Ok another idea Iam thinking of for the digits is to make a filter that is more transparent on end digits. |

Jaycar has cold cathode fluresecent lights (CCFL), they DO run from 12V, and are available in a range of colours and two sizes 10cm and 30cm. I've been thinking of getting two of the 30cm ones for the cluster.

Yeah jaycar CCFL's would be the way to go if you're going to do that sort of thing, but I don't think you'd be able to set them far enough back to get an even spread of light - you'd probably still be stuck with bright bands of light where the the tubes are. Although, that said pull apart an old laptops and pinch the backlight bits out of them

Isn't there flexible cathode's that you can bend to what shape you want. And round one's like what goes around XBOX Jewel. You could sit the 1 round one behind each tacho/speedo. Maybe red leds directly under the needles to make needles red if could stop them from flaring into each other. Going to have a look on ebay for the xbox jewel cathode's. |

You can get round ones (not from Jaycar though, try computer 'rice' stores), but I haven't seen flexible ones (CCFL tubes that is. they're made from glass).
You can get flexible EL wire (electroluminescent) but is 'glows' a green (light a t*** backlight) and isn't all that bright, it also has a short lifetime before it dims to half it's original brightness.

Off topic, but I think you'll find most of the xbox jewel mods are using normal leds.
I've modded mine (suprise suprise ) and used 2 leds shining either side of the clear jewel it lights up the whole thing. (you could use 4, but I was happy with the results from 2 (the cd you can see underneath is just used as a reflector, and with the jewel removed you can see the leds in place - they're fading multicoloured leds, so they keep changing all different colours)

pretty nifty mod there. I did an XBOX (by request) with two 10cm blue CCFLs' boy did that thing light up a room at night. The owner was most happy with it. Took a bit of modding to fit both tubes and their 'starters' in the xbox.

The one's Iam referring to are not led's as in 2 leds. They are a round plastic ring that looks as if it can be screwed into place. E-Bay Item # 8225412043 You will see what Iam getting at. |
