Hey

I got a 96 Ef falcon and a couple of weeks ago i went to go to work and it wouldnt start. I turn the key and it cranks over fine, doesnt loose any power it cranks happily and battery is fine. Anyways i got out of the car and pressed the button on the remote to lock the doors and it wouldnt work for some unknown reason. So i got back in the car and noticed the Smartlock light was not showing on the dash, I thought nothing of it and left it for a couple of hours then i came back to it pressed the button on remote and it randomly decided it would work, doors opened, i jumped in, Smartlock light was flashing on dash and it started fine. So i thought nothing of it and went and baught a new battery for the remote.

This has since happened 3 or four times in the past 2 weeks, I open the doors with the remote, jump in the car, and the smartlock light aint showing and car wont start. This time i got out of the car, disconnected the battery and then reconnected it and smartlock light starts flashing and car starts again. Its weird it just randomly does it, sometimes is fine others its not. Sometimes i open the boot first with the remote then i go to open the doors with the remote after and they wont open, so i use the key then smartlock light dont show and car wont start, i leave it for a few mins and it randomly starts flashing again and car starts.

Any help would be great
Is the smartlock light meant to flash in order for the car to start???

I really dont want to have to take the car to a ford dealership..... scary thought

Yep thats the smartlock fuse...i think its the same fuse for the interior lights and electric windows. If it is this fuse your electric windows (in the front at least) wont work and the interior light wont be turning on. Check them all (as i dont know what exact fuse it is) and replace any that are broken with the appropiate fuse and all will be perfectly fine again. Happened to me before...happened to everyone with a EF-EL i think...

I checked all fuses in the fuse box and they all seem to be fine.... The interior light turns on and works as its supposed to.

Where do i go from here??? Should i find out which fuse is the smartlock one?? does anyone know what one it is???

Thanx for such quick responses
Any help would be gr8

On the back of the fuse box cover, there is a diagram, will tell you. Sounds strange though, .

If it was heat related, then disconnecting and reconnecting the battery wouldn't have worked....
Must be something else!

 Good point!

Or they other way, sticky when cold, I dunno.

I have no clue on how this system works, but have overloaded a relay and virtually fried it, this making it sticky at tmes

Cheers

I put the car in nutral and start it
Also check the connections to the negetive terminal

Dont use the bolt to connect to terminals, get the round ones that fit around the terminals snugly.

IF problem is still not solved, put car in ACC, and leave for 40 min, i was told the smartlock gets new data ,and gives you flash codes if a problem exists.

Also check Fuses- the interieor lights one.

yer he is on the right track there, it turns over but doesnt start? Possibly the inhibitor switch (dont try clean it if it is it, just replace it, you can cause more problems then you origionally had by trying to clean one...i.e. blowing electrics out in relation to ur parking lights)

if it starts in N, then inhibitor switch...that is...if it starts in N but wont in P
