You missed the all important 3rd option: Dedicated Managed server.

We have a whole box to ourself. We have full control over the OS, but no control over hardware.

Sure, however we dont have the capital to purchase the hardware, nor do we have the luxury of getting quicker hardware at no capital cost when technology progresses. Then add the cost of having someone else manage our private hardware is far more expensive than a company managing the hardware they provide. This would mean putting a co-located server (which we can't afford) into rackspace in NSW, which leads to bandwidth we can't afford Remember Fordmods started off in an Australian co-location environment.. bandwidth was 8c/mb!!

We have a server with 24x7 hardware and network support, which incurs no capital cost to setup, repair or progress with technolgy. We have full control of everything else. I can't really see how co-location would be of any further benifit, unless we could chose our own hardware config, which is available in the Managed Dedicated server market place. However, costs go up - again out of our price range. We've been with this current provider for 12 months, and while 2 dead HDD's is disappointing - we've had less than 24 hours downtime. Thats pretty good for the entry level Managed Dedicated server market.
