I'd happily go out and spend $1000 on a pair of SCSI disks, but we have no control over our hardware :)

Well if you're after something cheap, and non-hardware related. Have you considered {DESCRIPTION}?

It has a live across a network disk mirroring feature, as well as application redundancy (both options are of course optional.

Of course I'm stabbing in the dark. If you want help let me know some details and I'll see what I can work up. disk/bandwidth/CPU/RAM requirements, heck we may end up with nicely redundant servers.

Remembering of course I work on 2 of the 3 biggest networks in the country (Optus and the DoD) I kinda know what I'm doing most of the time.

You missed the all important 3rd option: Dedicated Managed server.

We have a whole box to ourself. We have full control over the OS, but no control over hardware.

What kind of backup do you implement is it a tape backup or is it just an incremental (weekly/monthly) backup to someones hdd?

Ah, so there's the worst of both worlds.

Could you not go to a co-lo arrangement. Fully managed dedicated, OS/Apps/Hardware.

Sure, however we dont have the capital to purchase the hardware, nor do we have the luxury of getting quicker hardware at no capital cost when technology progresses. Then add the cost of having someone else manage our private hardware is far more expensive than a company managing the hardware they provide. This would mean putting a co-located server (which we can't afford) into rackspace in NSW, which leads to bandwidth we can't afford :) Remember Fordmods started off in an Australian co-location environment.. bandwidth was 8c/mb!!

We have a server with 24x7 hardware and network support, which incurs no capital cost to setup, repair or progress with technolgy. We have full control of everything else. I can't really see how co-location would be of any further benifit, unless we could chose our own hardware config, which is available in the Managed Dedicated server market place. However, costs go up - again out of our price range. We've been with this current provider for 12 months, and while 2 dead HDD's is disappointing - we've had less than 24 hours downtime. Thats pretty good for the entry level Managed Dedicated server market.

Whats currently setup in place IS the best option.....HDDs fail all the time whether there expensive SCSI or just plain old ATA IDE.

And thats right unless a members fee etc was introduced then any other option just isnt feasible...and i know this would never be a preffered option....Too 3 drives had died..pfft who cares ignoring the downtime compare how long fordmods has been running for...not bad really. Remeber servers are nothing like home PCs.

And data_mine I take it by 2nd largest network or whatever your referring to ISP network not tele-communications or just network in Australia in general ????

Well Telstra comes first, so yeah it includes telco.
Then it's where I work (100,000+ desktops, 15,000+ servers, 6,000+ cisco devices, 4,000+ nortel devices, + large numbers of juniper, cabletron, 3com etc.)
Then it's Optus (for who I work)

funny huh.

I'm heavily on the IP network + Unix side of things rather than telco network.
