Take the thermostat out and drop it in a saucepan of boiling water and see if it opens fully.

my experience with thermostats is if u got one that works dont change it!
i changed my thermostat along with new coolant also flushed system, the temp guage was all over the show constantly up and down, put in a few different types from genuine to aftermarket still went up and down eventually i found the old thermostat that i thaught i threw away and put it in. seemed to stop my temp from wondering now stays at a nice 92oC.

Hey Guys
Just on that topic, when i had my ed (bout 6 mths ago) it used to go to the red line in summer on very hot days and also days when i used the aircon. Had the head pressure tested but there was no drop. However there were water stains on the side of the head on the outside. When temp gauge goes to the red and you turn the car off do u hear a hissing noise, its not the radiator but mine came from towards the head. So yeh, Just though id share that

You might be right, however there is no mention of coolant loss.
