He's talking performance dude, you don't need to defend the AU looks just yet. Your time will come though, lol.

Better engine, more refined steering and suspension, better brakes.
Better head & gasket, stronger bottom end as Frank said. Roughly the same weight. The AUs a goer The AU should out-handle and out-perform an EL.

My parents have AN AU3 and it definatly handles alot better than my EF.

from my experience the AU seems to have better mid range power, but the AU seems to struggle up high.
i'm sure exhaust changes etc would free a lot of that up. the EF/EL doesn't seem to feel like this, they'll happily rev out easier then the AU but not have the same midrange.

i do some casual work in a used car dealership, and had to go pick up an au2 forte today for the boss. after a bit of driving (and a little bit of thrashing) it was obvious that the au had a little bit more power than my ef mont..
then i realised the air con was on my god, after that the power difference was amazing, at low to mid range u get thrown back into ur seat 10x more than the ef. after driving both u can easily say the au wins in power (obviously more kW) but u can definately feel it too if thats wat ur looking for and yes frank if u try reeaal hard u can get an au to look nice

once you drive a au for comparison, you're hooked. unless you see a fully worked EL pumping 200- 300rwkw at a car yard.
all you have do then is sink into the sets & enjoy!
