Hi,

I bought this mirror off ebay for about $35 including postage. How good is that?? In heritage green in good nick! Only problem is it is a fairlane mirror and i have a fairmont. Dunno if its the same year but the mirror is the same, its just the actual mounting piece that is slightly different. My question is...do you guys know how to remove the actual mirror from the mounting piece without removing the glass?? I dont wanna take the glass out cause it seems very annoying to get it back in.

It kinda looks like you need some sort of ford special tool (hate ford "special" tools :( )

Here are some photos:

The mounts are different?

I just had to do mine (someone ripped the glass out and smashed it) and to get the actualy old mirror off took about 5min. With the 3 screws that hold it in.

Are you sure that the mounting base if different? lol. I would be suprised

I had one break a few years back, IIRC all you need to do is squeeze all those barbs inwards and the two pieces should come apart. This might be easier with the wiring removed fro the centre.

Yes i am sure they are different :). I have included a photo below for non-believers. The one on the left is the one i bought...maybe its from a different model. It doesn't fit onto the car properly.

Squeezing the barbs together is not easy, and i cant see any way to remove the wires. And even if i could pull the old one apart, i dont wanna take the glass out of the new one. I was thinking some sort of tool fits into that hole and pulls all the barbs together or something. Im gonna go to ford and ask them tomorrow.

nah - you just squeeze em all together with your fingers ... they use those "barb" type plugs in quite a few places in the car ... easy enough to pull apart once you've done a couple.

Ford says you can't detach the mirror from the mounting piece. I believe them cause its impossible. It may seem easy but its not :S

Anyone know anyone selling a heritage green passenger mirror for a fairmont?
