My mum has just bought an XF for like $500. Its the 250 carby donk with a 5spd behind it. Every time you give it a bit to much gas, it looses power, backfires through the carby and then takes off. Yes, sounds really funny going up the road through all 5 gears but It loosing alot of power because of it. I have rebuilt the carby with a carby kit and set it all to spec. Still does it. Im thinking mabey head gasket next but that dosent make sense. It idles beautifully. I hooked a tach up to it and it idles perffectly with like a 20 - 30 rpm difference here and there. Help Please!! Im slowly loosing hair!!

I didnt clear the timing marks when I checked it but it was lighting up when the mark was in the middle of the crank marks. I would say about 2 - 3 degree and where is the mixture screw on the webbers? I cant find it any where!!

if is backfiring through the carby sounds like the float level or mixture in correct , or check the leads one by one for resitance 6000 ohms per 300 mm of lead and make sure u have continuity through the coil , and maybe check for inlet manifold leaks using aerostart and spraying it along the manifold

I did think float level but when I checked it, it was all good. 7mm level and 14mm travel. Yet to check mixture but will get a coil soon!

i had that exact same problem in my auto xf, and it came down to some crap in the fuel lines... i replaced both filter elements and flushed the lines as best i could, now it runs ok...

As a rule of thumb. 99% of all fuel problems can be traced to the electrical system.

Just a stab in the dark here but the fuel your puttin' in isn't an Ethenol blend is it?
I've had some real dramas with that fuel in a couple of cars
