I have an EB series I 1991 Fairmont Ghia. On the way to work this morning I noticed I could actually see my temperature gauge moving up and down Truely, the gauge normally sits just in the operating temperature range, but today it went up to the half way mark and then down to just above where it would normally sit. This was happening totally independent of what the engine was doing.
The engine is not overheating to that degree and there is plenty of coolant in the radiator - expansion tank. Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be |

Clogged cores, has it ever been professionally cleaned, as in cores reamed out, i did mine, straight after i bought it.

I have just travelled from work to home and the temp gauge was moving between its normal position - just within the operating temperature, and just a tad over midway.
When I got home I decided to try a little experiment. I removed the "radiator cap" There was a very weak release of pressure and I was able to remove the cap without any spurting hot coolant. Now doesn't that mean that the coolant is not under sufficient pressure which I would imagine would also cause the cooling system to not be functioning efficiently. Does this also mean that perhaps the radiator cap is less than doing its job ??? |

Sounds as though the cooling system is not pressurising. I would probably replace the radiator cap first. If it is not that check hoses and water pump for leaks.

Definately replace the radiator cap to start with as there dirt cheap from auto stores. Is your coolant level droping at all?

Thanks guys. I will get a radiator cap and try it out. The coolant level, if anything, appears to have increased slightly.
Update - strike one on the radiator cap !!! If my water pump is stuffed would it be making a, for want of a better term, "tapping sound" from the drivers side ?? I will be trying a new thermostat later when the engine has cooled. Also I have checked all of the hoses and not even a dribble is evident. Does coolant have a use by date - if it does would it produce the same effects as I have described in previous posts ?? |

Coolant does have a used by date, but I don't think that it would cause the issues you are describing.
Did you try the new thermostat - how did it go? |

if water pump goes it will either start rattling or most likely start leaking slowly from the small hole at the bottom.
are thermos kicking in?

'Tis an EB, no thermo fans to speak of. |

fluctuating temp gauge is most commenly caused by blocked radiators.

OK - further update. Firstly the EB I have has NO THERMO fans just the big old bugger up front. I have tried a new thermostat, what that has now lead to is the temperature gauage slowly moving between just over half way sitting at that temp for a few seconds then returning to its normal operating temperature. This occurs no matter what the engine is doing, by that I mean whether the engine is idling, pulling the car along at any speed.
There appears to be a slight rattle comming from under the car - driver's side when the engine gets warm. |

did the temp gauge start to fluxuate before or after you put the new thermostat in?
