Hi Guys,
I've been quoted $700 to locate and repair a leak in my A/C. The system isnt holding any pressure and the repair guy reckoned the leak was probably under the dash somewhere. Thus, the quote entails pulling the whole dash out to find the leak and repair it. Does this sound like a fair price....?? |

If the work entails removing the dash it is cheap as it takes approx 6-8 hours remove and replace to replace the evaporator an d regas system

Generally speaking aircon leaks are found at joins...shoddy o-rings etc.
Best to run a pressure test on your system first...the gas leak locator that professionals use will locate the leak...and hopefully it will not require replacement of exchanger under dash
Get yourself a service manual for your car so you can avoid being bulls**ted to. I seem to recall for example that all aircon pipe joins are hot side of firewall. I may be wrong....(frequently). Good luck mate

they should put in a dye and then look for the leak by finding the coloured gas.
in my opinion, unless he tells you exactly where the leak is coming from he doesn't have a clue.

Most "professional" places will have a sniffer to find the leak-usually a leak that big (lost in one week) should be easy to find.I had a leak on my old EA at a point where the hose is crimped to the fitting near the TX valve-not a normal place to find a leak like that,-try twisting your hoses around at the fittings-if they are loose-good chance its there?
He sounds like a rip off-but they are hard to fix if it is an evaporator !!!

If it involves pulling the dash out, probably bout an on par price, i'd still shop around but

ive had 2 falcons and had it done on both.its most prob the evaporator. and $700 is bout right.its all labour cost cause pulling the dash is long and involved.if they are good blokes they will replace the hearter core too,saves u pulling the dash out again if that happens to fail.

Drop it off and take the dash out yourself to save some money matbe?
