Ok i have an EL fairmont ghia, when turning slow under brakes it sounds like the steering rack is crunching as the steering wheel is turned.
Another thing is that when the steering wheel is turned back and forth with car stationary and engine off there is no clunking, but if the same is done with car running it clunks and can be felt in the car. Ive checked the tie rods and ball joints and all are ok, im putting it down to the rack as ive heard they normally go at 100,000 k's.
Just want some other opinions and if there are any good places to get a reco rack in melbourne. Tnx all.

My EF does exactly the same thing, no noise with the engine off or no brakes applied. I think its possibly the rack when its under load ( brakes on etc )

Adjust the rack, done mine, used a 20mm allen key, jack the whole front off the ground, and adjust till there is extremely little play felt at the wheel, its easy. Hardest part is finding a 20mm allen key.

if it was that adjustment it would do it with the car not running, there would be a clunk either way, thanks for the sugestion. its like the pinion gear is worn on one side only and when turning it crunches?? looks like a new rack!!

Mine looked new too, once the front end, both tyres, are off the ground, then you will feel any slop, like wheel bearings, until you get the load off them, its hard to tell how sloppy they are.

Mine has 173000, i think the rack is the same, for speed sensitive, its just a different sensor? ecu programming?. Try and adjust, costs nothing, and you may get some more life out of it, up to you though, a new rack would be nice.
