what are you experiences with the injector cleaner steady? i read somewhere that it does nothing and is just a gimmick. what are your thoughts?

when i used to work for BP, i had a tanker driver tell me that the 98octane Ultimate, was a gimmik too - that the extra stuff they put in it (- i think he sed something about ethanol, which i highly doubt personally) just evaporates when its burned and gives no extra power or nething.

i beg to differ with this tanker driver (btw, he was a BP driver! lol)
i had an 83 ZK EFI (they came without the knock sensor i belive) and it used to ping and miss and all sorts of other 'good' stuff on 91 / 95 RON, but put a tank of 98RON in it, and it ran like a dream! it was noticeable pretty much straight away the improvement..

i ran a tank of the ultimate in my 2002 daewoo lanos - and that thing got even better than normal fuel econ and more power - and this thng is only a pissy lil 4cycl 4.6L motor!!

i personally think that BP Ultimate is a very very very good fuel, and worth the small amount extra per tank to use it :)

If you doubt at all the difference betwwen 91 RON and ultimate 98, you need only run a forced induction car.

My car - WOT with 98 ron, smiles had by all.

The other day when the servo had nothing but 91, i put a bit in. Even with a little bit more than a p***y foot, RPM gets to about 2500, supercharger starts doing its thang and the pinging ensues. Even when ive run 95 it has been more prone to pinging under real hard loads (taking off from standing start, uphill @ WOT).

PS cruise control not great for economy - you can get the same speed at less throttle doing it yourself...

First up there are two sounds that make me cringe when I hear them.
1. Cars Pinging..
2. Cars missing a cylinder (or more) :x :x

So don't let the poor old windsor ping  While you have to run the s**t fuel just tweak back the dizzy a bit. :) (Just make a nice mark where it is at the moment and set it back there when you get the good stuff in the tank again).

I'm not boosted but if I set the car to factory specs, she pings on 91.
So at the moment it's adjusted to run fine on Shell regular, but if I fill with Safeway regular it pings under load at low revs.

If I don't re-adjust the timing then spending an extra 10c/l makes no difference at all.
Adjusting the timing for 98 makes a small difference but hardly worth the extra $ (seeing as I spend 80% of my time stuck in traffic anyway).

don't think ive ever experienced pinging (thankgod)

is it actually a very audiable unmissable ping noise?

somewhat liek the most expensive machine in the whole hospital.. the machine that goes PING!

Well it's not like any electronic 'ping' noise.

I guess it sounds closer to a loose lifter or tappet kind of noise. :?
Because during pinging the piston is trying to be forced back down on it's up stroke, it has that mechanical sound of the pistons being slapped with a hammer. It's usually worst at low revs and heavy load but it's a sound that's the same on any engine that's pinging.

But then there's light pinging and heavy. If I've got the windows up and the stereo going then I usually don't notice a bit of light pinging, but if it's heavy not only does it sound chronic and cause heaps of power loss, but it doesn't do the motor much good!!

detonation..
sounds more like some one in your engine bay hitting your block with a hammer.

pre ignition..
sounds like some one in your bay shaking a can with a hand full a ball bearings in it

i don't realy agree with your description of whats going on.

first under normal conditions with the advance of the spark, it's trying to push the piston down on the compression stroke anyway.

the noise that is heard by us is not actualy metal parts of the engine hitting each other. the noise is created by the 2 flame fronts hitting each other.

it's for that reason that detonation (spontaintious combustion after the spark plug ignites the fuel) sounds different to pre ignition (spontaintious combustion befor the spark plug ignites the fuel)
