I can't really describe the axle pulse rings any better than my previous post - you should be able to see the holes for the sensor fit on the alloy backing plate.

there was on hole on the axle just outside the bearing cover...am I looking in the right place?

Well there's a hole the size of your thumb and a smaller hole for a small bolt near it. This is on the alloy backing plate assy that surrounds the axle assy and the brake caliper bolts to.
The sensor sits through this hole and has a dog leg, this then positions near the axle - the axle should have like a toothed sleeve sitting on it - the teeth pass by the sensor when the axle rotates.
