Cleaned my cooling system today and removed the thermastat not realising l would need a new gasket so instead i used silicon as the gasket. Does anyone reckon it wont work as l went for a brief drive and let it get to full temp with no probs and i've heard of other people using it instead of gaskets on rocker covers and stuff. Or is my best bet to go straight to bursons in the morning and get a gasket???

nope still doesnt. but isnt the housing alloy?

not sure if that makes any difference.

But, there is a rubber strip around the thermostat its self, so i gues thats why? who cares, as long as it works.LOL

Yeah i'm talking about where the thermastat joins into the side of the engine. Alloy on alloy.

well the rubber gasket is the gasket and it's the only one you should be useing anyway, there is no other factory gasket available for it.

True, though I have seen aftermarket thermostats come with a paper gasket, which of course gives people the wrong idea.
I only use the rubber ring gasket with a thin smear of selastic on it, as I have had them leak in the past without it.
