Follow those tips that hornet recommended and avoid cutting the paint if you can
Polishes come in various abrasive levels, from a wet look finishing polish that removes a tiny amount of paint and may not have the power to restore oxidised paint and medium grade polishes that remove more paint, most scratches and remove medium to fine swirl marks
Wash, clay, try a paint cleanser unless the paint is oxidised and faded, if so use a medium polish then finish with a glaze or finishing polish

I'll recommend "Meguires" polishes and cutting compounds.

Made my car return from grey to white.
