G,day
I am a bit confused with what heads and Inlet manifold Ford used on it's Series 2 XH XR8 Ute. At first i thought they were very similar to EL XR8s, but i am reading through various forums and am hearing different things. Are the heads on the XH GT40s? (it says on FPV site they are Exlplorer heads - is that the same as GT40s??) and if they are GT40s, whats the difference between them and GT40Ps?? - cos i am about to buy GT40Ps and wanna know if its worth it or just do some work to the heads i already have... It also says the XH used the Cobra Inlet taken from ELGT. How do you tell the difference? Mine looks the same as a stock EL XR8. If it is the same as ELGT, is it worth upgrading to Explorer? or will the one i have be better?? heres the link to the ford site anyway http://www.fpv.com.au/index.asp?link_id=4.264 thanks in advance for replies

If its the same as the EL XR8 then it would have Explorer manifold and E7 heads. That is what I have on mine.
GT40s were not used until the AU XR8 but all that is based on sedans. I'm not sure on utes. The GT40 manifold is the one used on the EL GT and is alloy and more tubular than the Explorer one but i doubt you have that. To definately check your heads have a look at whether the ignition leads have a 90 degree bend in them from the spark plug, if so they are GT40 if they have a greater than 90 degree bend then they are E7. Not worth doing anything to the explorer manifold but it would be worth changing the heads because the E7 heads are so bad its not even worth porting. Best get a set of GT40P heads or better yet some GT40X alloy heads or another aftermarket brand. Currently I'm looking at getting some GT40X heads for my EL XR8. |

Ive done some more research, and found that i do indeed have GT40 heads. Only the XH seies 2 had these heads (and maybe the EL GT)
Is it worth me buying the GT40Ps and using them instead? or could i get same performance results from working the heads i have?? ive posted a picture of my engine bay. Can someone identify this intake as being a Cobra Setup?? or is it standard XR8, same as EL? and how do you tell. I looked at some other EL XR8s and they differ. Not sure if i was looking at HO or Explorer. Could people plz post up pics and identify each?? thanks! thanks

I've never heard of Ford Australia putting a Cobra intake on any of their vehicles. They did GT-40, Explorer and HO intakes.

No its not worth getting GT40Ps if you have GT40s.
Cobra manifold is almost identical to the Explorer manifold so it would be hard to tell the difference if any. What year is your ute? If its 1998 and still produced when the AUs were being made it makes sense that you have GT40s otherwise I would of thought they were E7s. Lucky you are. You definately have the Explorer manifold and the back end is very different from the HO manifold. HO doesnt have the bottom plenum it just tapers off at the back end. The runners on the HO manifold are in a straight line while the Explorer was offset going into the lower manifold. |

I think a '93 Cobra manifold will flow maybe 5 - 10% more than the Explorer manifold.

The motor the ute was pulled from was a late 97 model. If u go 2 the fpv website under XH series 2 xr8 ul see it says "this XH is closer to specs of AU, rather than EL"
My sparkplugs r on an angle, so that could confirm the heads are GT40? what angle are the spark plugs on E7s? Just a question also; how much work should be dont to the GT40s to outperform GT40Ps?? and should i have them shaved to bring compression up?

ITs more a question of the spark plug leads. 90 degree spark plug covers on the plugs is GT40, greater than 90 (~120 degrees) is E7. GT40s needed a 90 degree angle on the leads to clear the headers. |

Ok
i've dug up a photo from when motor was still in donor car. These are the original leads. motor didnt have many kms on it - everything is in its stock form. Can u tell by looking at those leads? theres another shot of the motor when it was going in. can u tell any difference by looking at the head sideon? I know it would be easier if i could actually look at the motor - but im overseas - so i am organising things from here. sorry bout lack of quality in photos - its all i have thanks for any advice given

Well that is a Cobra upper there and the plug angles look the same as my old E7TE heads.
The ED XR8 Sprint came out with the Cobra manifold.

Yep, looks like a Cobra manifold to me too. "Explorer" heads are the GT40p's...I'd be suprised if they would fit GT40's to the XHII when every other V8 from the same year had the p's.
Have a look at the outside corner of the cylinder head. If its got "GTP" cast into it, then they are GT40p's GT40p have a more efficient combustion chamber and better flowing exhaust port, but there is not enough difference between gt40/gt40p to bother changing. |

Ok cool.
thanks 4 the replies. ill have to check heads for sure when i get home I've taken this quote from the FPV site; "For this version of the Windsor V8, Tickford combined the new Explorer cylinder heads with Cobra inlet manifolds from the EL GT program. It was a welcome return to the original concept of a coupe ute based on Ford's V8 performance model. Tickford modified the engine adding the EL GT inlet manifold, extractors and twin pipes which ended in a large 3 inch diameter chrome tail pipe. It was quite different in detail to the EL XR8 185 kW engine and was closer in specification to the AU XR8 engine." Guess i'll be very happy if i find that they are in fact GT40s or Ps considering i bought the donor ute for 3k!! cheers fellas

Plug lead angles look like E7 heads to me >than 90 degrees.
Let us know if it has the GTP on the heads like xr8ute said. Cheers |
