Everytime I give my car a big push under acceleration there seems to be a big black cloud of smoke that i leave behind. What causes this?? I took the car for a tune up a few ago and they replaced two relays. The two grey ones that sit in the fuse box inside the car. I have also replaced the plugs and leads. I took it in becuase it was running rich and still seems to be The auto electrican did a diagnostic on it.
Do i need to take the car and put it on to a dyno so they can sort it out were it is running rich in the rev range? Or what could be the problem. |

get ure fuel injectors checked, cleaned out.

ok putting on a dyno is only going to tell you what you already know. it's running rich. it's not going to solve any thing.
you need to find out why it's over fueling. a number of things can cause it. things like actual coolent temp vs. temp the ecu is seeing. fuel pressure feul spray pattern from the injector, if poor can cause an incomplete burn even though the right amout of fuel is there. poor spark can have the same effect. a carbon build up on the valves can cause problems too you just have to go through all the posibilities. |

I have an EL Ghia, so same engine as yours, and had it on a dyno recently.
AFR's for normal driving were 12/13:1. At WOT high rpm it gues down to 10/11:1. Lean cruise is 14.4:1. Now that is bloody rich as. Makes a turbo look lean. But it definately accounts for how most XR's blow that nice puff of black smoke on hard acceleration. Tends to be worse in manuals than autos I've noticed as well. And that was with a recoed head, new injectors, 3 month old oxy sensor and a newly cleaned and sealed BBM. Last edited by arm79 on Wed Jan 04, 2006 9:19 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

wouldnt be piston rings would it? or is it dodgy valves?

How do i go about checking most of these things? I am unsure if it says anything in the repair manual i have. If it goes on a dyno though cant they sort it out and find were the problem is?? |

Yeah my XR is blowing a bit of black smoke as well, as far as i know the problem lies with the leads in my car, they are still in bad need of replacement. Also the injectors could use a good clean..
How's the spark plugs and leads looking? They might need replacing, then get the injectors profesionally cleaned. "should" elimate some of the problems.
