hi
i just put el thermo fans on my ea s pac. every thing seems to be fine but when i have the air con on and head lights on with the thermo fans on the gauge shows 11 volts and the dash lights are dim..but when i turn the air con and head lights off the gauge shows 14 volts. im conserned that if i drive with every thing on the battery may drain flat... do i need a higher amp altinator to cope with the extra power drain or is my alternator on its way out??? it is a mpfi engine. what other altinators will fit without converting to serpintine belt??? |

yep you may need a bigger alternator.
add up all the electrical loads in your car to see how many amp you pulling. i think the thermos ar 180w?? watts / volts = Amps

The standard alternator for a Falcon may only be around 60 amps, whereas Fairmonts will be in the region of 85 amps (Bosch type).
The EF and EL falcons have a 100 amp alternator from Mitsubishi, the pulley offset is different due to the EF and EL Falcons use a serpentine belt (one big belt). Now the question is. if you change the pulley and the connections to the alternator, can you fit it to the EA to ED brackets and use the EA to ED tensioning system. Or you fit an 85 amp (Bosch) Fairmont Alternator, which would be easier.

on hot days my voltage very very slowly drops from 13.5 to 12. i rarly see mine at 14 tested it with a volt meter and the guage is pretty much correct.
never really had any problems though like no lights dimming or anything like thatr when playing the stez loud?? i just think its the batterys fully charged? |

Your EA S pac is fitted with a bosch 75 amp alternator. The fairmonts and Taxi's had 85 amps and the GL's had 60 amps.
Like said before get a fairmont alternator from the wreckers (85amp) but a 100 amp alternator from an EF/EL would be better. Basically at the moment your alternator cannot hold the current at idle speed for the thermo's/.. |

thanks guys
im not to sure what im going to do?? i will see what type of alternator it is maybe someone has replaced it with a 60 amp alt? if so i will just get a 85 amp alternator otherwise i may try to modify a 100 amp ef alternator and see what happens... |

I had the EL thermos in my 1990 EA S pack, which had the factory 75amp alternator, I also had 100watt High beams & 100watt driving lights. The Alternator kept up with that load with the AC on for many years.
So it could very well be that the previous owner replaced your alternator with a 60amp Gli one.

I have now fitted an EF/EL I6 100 Amp Alternator to an ED I6, not pleasant but possible.

What did you have to do to get it to fit? Currently mine seems to hold up alright with 600W of lights, air con, stereo, and amp. I dont have the thermos as of yet, still running the clutch type fan.

By adding more accessories and not updating your alternator, you run the risk of a flat battery, especially if you are in the middle of nowhere and its dark and raining.

Find 1 x 100 amp alternator, remove pulley, not easy. Disconnect battery.
cut 3mm of rear of 100 amp pulley , fit behind 70 amp pulley on 100 amp shaft, do up nut real tight without damaging internal windings of alternator, suggest using threadseal also. grind some of alternator near where upper bracket mounts. two options here, if you have the engine down and upper bracket off, open up hole to 12 mm on adjusment section. thread hole to 12 mm on upper mount and open up hole on adjustment nut and replace bolt fro 12 mm (best solution) the other is to use a longer 10 mm bolt and nut at the rear of the bracket, this is hard to get the nut on. Remove power steering belt. replace belt for bosch 3pk925, connect B+ lead and rectifier lead . Fit power steering belt and tension. reconnect battery. Check voltage at battery it should be between 14.1 and 14.7 volts when charging. Should take 5 hours or so to do. Good luck

Here's an idea.... get your alternator tested!
Diagnose first, THEN rectify. You could very well have a fried 75amp alternator that's only putting out 20 amps. I was telling my parents for about 6 months to get their alternator checked when they were having electrical power issues. Went through 2 optima batteries they did. Dad was convinved it was something staying on with the ignition off but guess who was right all along. Me! |

HI i had it tested and it was charging at 14.7 volts wich is fine. its just that the fans and headlights + air con draws alot of amps its only a 70 amp alt so i will be upgrading soon... |

the thermos draw around 25-35 amps while running.
in my ute i upgraded the internals of the alternator from 55 to 85A.
