hey fellas,
the needle for the speedo in my ef has got a problem. it doesnt move smoothly. it sort of sticks in a spot, then catches up, then is a bit wobbily and just doesnt look like its moving smoothly. the tacho, temp and fuel needles are fine. does the needle mechanisim need lubrication to make it smooth? cheers ryan |

maybe it might be worth pulling it out, and physically seeing how the needle moves - if it feels like its sticking, use some grease, and see if that improves it. perhaps even the backing (i.e. the actual speedo itself) has slightly warped? its only thinish plastic, so maybe has warped and causing the needle to stick?

prolly a good idea not to spray anything on it as such - due to the fact you'd prolly stain the cluster if you sprayed any other surfaces. i'd use a thicker sort of grease - but you'd only need a wee bit...

my brother's Festiva did the same thing, we thought it might have been the speedo cable goig straight into the drive shaft, but in the end the whole speedo assembly in the instrument cluster had died.
test the speedo itself.

my speedo started playing up at the start of this year it would strugle to climb up and when you took your foot of the pedal it would drop to 0, the problem was the speed sensor on the transmission was shagged it became hard to spin and stripped the little plastic cog or drive gear, it only had one tooth left.
you can get under the car and remove it off the tranny and spin it with your hand while the ignition is in the "on" position ang get some one to look at your speedo. from memory the speed sensor was $53 and the cog was $9

an easy thing to try first it do open it up and just lift the needle of the pin abit more, this can often caus it to stop sticking
