G'day guys! I need some suggestions on what to do about this problem. I have started hearing rattling noise from my engine and it only gets evident when I start stepping on the gas. So at idle, there's no rattle. But when I apply gas, the rattling starts when rpm is around 1500 to 2000. Beyond 2000 rpm the rattling is gone. I'm suspecting its the timing chain 'coze I can hear that noise right in front of the motor. What's the best way to treat this...and what could have caused it? Thanks in advance for the help. Cheers

make sure the timing chain is nice and snugg fitting around the gears, remove the rocker cover and see if its lose at all . If its the timing chain guides, replace em ... Big job for a $7 part .
If its just lose, to tighten it, there is a 14mm bolt next to the power steering pump on the timing case, remove that bolt and use a allan key to tighten it .... I forget what size the allan key is, but its a smallish one . |

mate its very common for theem to start getting a bit of a rattle id try using a slightly thicker oil for better oil pressure etc or yeh check the guides etc but the tensioner is NOT ADJUSTABLE its spring loaded so once its released thats it and they generally dont have problems unles someone has fiddled with it but yeh just simply pop off ur rocker cover and have a looksy

Have you checked the idler pulleys on the sepentine belt? bearings could be shot.

Thanks heaps for the replies.. Yeah, I'll have a look inside. So if its not the tensioner when it would be a problem with the guides? Haven't seen one actually, but do they wear out?
I see that this would be a very time consuming job, so I can only do this probably next weekend. Question is, if it would do any harm to my engine if I keep running it like this for another week or so? Thanks again. |

I had a guide break in half in an EA once, that gave me a timing chain rattle.
