Greetings and a Happy New Year,
I have a 89 Fairmont Sedan. Cannot afford a brand new one so I'm looking at getting a s/h towbar and trans. cooler. I'm pretty confident I can DIY. What models could I get from? Is it only EA - ED or can you go higher? Do wagons fit - I thought they probably dont? Thanx |

Wagons are different, as are ef - el. But you should be able to pick one up for fairly cheap! Trans cooler shouldnt be too hard to rig up, but the tow bar might be a little more involved in getting it to line up properly

Yeah,
I heard they can be a bit tricky. Definitely going to to take the rear bumper off first, as suggested in a post I saw somewhere. Or am I asking for trouble getting it back on straight? Hoping I might get a s/h factory fitted one ( the lower capacity ), so the holes might line up? Or will they? Thanx again |

the rear bar will have to come off. it shouldnt be too hard to line up. once you get one you should be able to hold it up and see where the bolts go.
easy as lol though when i got mine i had it fitted by someone for me. i have since taken the rear bar off and seen it doesnt look too hard. i just couldnt be bothered at the time and it wasnt that much to have it done for me.

Not sure whether the holes are already there?

there should be holes in the floor pan or what ever in the rear.
have seen a few of towbars fitted and never seen anyone have to drill holes out.

Just fitted genuine Ford, second hand tow bar -$50 on ebay,to my EB and it took about 1 hour to complete.Rear bar does need to come off along with rear wheels-makes it easier to get at screws to get bar off.Assistance required to fit bolts above wheel well.

Thanks for that kwaussiekid.
You've given me the confidence to give it a go. |

What size bar are you looking for? A Standard 1600kg bar sandwiches between the rear bar and the body using existing bolts/holes.
Not sure about heavy duty 2300kg bar as I have never fitted one.

Probably looking at a 1600kg one - its only for a cage trailer for the tip and moving the odd bit of furniture etc.
I may be wrong but I think the 2300kg involves drilling some different / extra holes?? Thanx to all for their help. |
