I'm starting to think that one of my injectors may be leaking internally. When I start my car after its been sitting, either over night, or even for 20 mines the car is hard to start. Some times I need to hold my foot flat for it to fire (like a flooded carby car). When the car does start it runs rough for a minute or so, blowing some black smoke out the tail pipe and all you can smell is petrol.
How can I test to see if this is leaking internally, and if it is, should I get them cleaned or replaced? Thanks guys

I have not long ago had my eb2 motor rebuilt, and am suffering the same problem. I had an aftermarket ecu put in at the same time, and the engine builder says that the ecu [EMS 4424] has no idle control and that is why it has trouble starting...aftyer seeing that u have the same problem its making me wonder could it b something else????

i highly doubt that the ems has no idle control!
after a qucik search it does not say it does not does not! it could be a leaky injector may just need a good clean has your fuel econ dropped? you could have a set of faulty leads/plugs that is making it hard to start

Yeah fuel econ is shocking. But I've also put a cam in. I wasn't expecting great economy, or a smooth idle, but this is extreme. When the car is first started it smells like pure petrol in the air. Take it for a drive and pull up and let it idle, and it doens't.

mmm
only way i reckon is to get em prfessionally cleaned..??? they should tell u if there is 1 leaking their may be some dirt in the injector stopping it from closing

I might rip the plugs out and see if there is anything obviously wrong with any of the cylinders

WOULD SUGEST CHECKING FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR.When it is not working properly it will give indicatioins of a flooded motor.

Well I just did an oil change, and reset the ECU while I was at it. When I first started the car, it seemed to Idle smoother, and there was no fuel smell. The car had been sitting for just over an hour, maybe a logged error in the ECU might of been playing up. When I can dig up a LED I'll have a look at error codes.
Still got a couple of flat spots, enter aftermarket ecu

Thanks for the info.. and best way to check this would be.. Incidently if the engine idles a bit better your injectors could be dirty. Quick and dirty way I'd think is to have the engine running, pull the fuel reg vaccy line, suck on it, if you get a slight taste of petrol, obviously the diaphragm has pin holes. I'd be inclined to look at the injectors - undo the fuel rail mounting bolts, and pull the injectors and rail slightly from the manifold, leave it sit, ensure the upper clips are on properly on each injector to seat them in their sockets on the fuel rail. Short the top right pin of the diagnosis connector to earth, turn ignition on so the fuel pump will operate, and check the injectors to see if there are any leaks - I'd use safety glasses .

Thanks for the tip, I'll definatly give that a go. It probably wouldn't hurt to get them cleaned too.

Another easy way to check for leaky injectors is to disconnect the wiring connectors to the injectors after you have run the car. Leave the fuel pump on for a bit. Try and start the car. If it fires a little when cranking that means that some fuel has leaked in from your injectors.
