Howdy 'yall. I have a buddy with a V6 VN Commodore, who recently had a bit of work done on the engine (cleaned up heads and inlet manifold, extractors, etc). But he was having problems with the engine hunting at idle, not very good low down pick up and was really wheezing trying to get to redline. Now...he has replaced the O2 sensor and had the ECU 'reset' the other day and boy, does the bloody thing GO!
Now...as my 97 Fairmont has now clocked over 197000 km's (not running as smooth as it used to when i bought it with 119000kms one year ago) and is nearing its tenth year in existance, would it be a wise investment in replacing the oxygen sensor? Is it something that wears out and needs to be replaced over time? And would there be a 'turnaround' in performance and economy? |

Quite possibly a turn around in performance, these things tend to go and can go anytime they feel like it, try pulling your's out and giving it a bit of a clean up with some tb cleaner or something of that kind. It won't make to much of a difference if nothing is wrong with it.

holy s**t 80000 klicks in a year!!!!
oxy sensors built up s**t on the element causing wrong figures and they also totally die which the ecu should pick up but if they are reading something altho not totally right it wont always pick it up so yer as said above pull it out and clean it up and see how you go also you could find out how much a genuine and aftermarket oxy sensor is worth maybe if they aint that much just replace it and see if theres a differance because other than getting a ford compuotr and watching the occiliscope wave and make sure its moving up and down as it should then yer thats the way you go

I replaced mine after 10 years (320,000Klm) and now I get beter fuel economy on both gas and petrol and it starts better etc. I highly recommend it. A boffin I know reckons every 100k should replace oxy sensors. I am leaning to agree with him. Anything in that part of the exhaust at 1000 degrees has gotta die after a while.

My car idled much smoother after replacing it. Apparently Bosch recommend replacing them every time you change your plugs.

Of course Bosch would say that, that's an extra ~$100 on top of spark plugs.
But.... I cleaned mine the other day, I noticed mine was running uber rich (dyno plot shows 10:1 AFR for most of the rev range!), I've cleaned it and it no longer smells rich, will have to get it dynoed again to be sure.

Where is the O2 sensor?

right down the bottom of the engine bay in the exhaust manifold, or your extractors, just in front of the cat, pretty much right beside the steering arm. just a little screw in sensor with 2 wires coming out of it.

will be 3 wires, and on regular headers, it's mid way (between cylinders 3 and 4). Pacemaker move the sensor towards the end of the secondaries (as said) before the flange to the cat.
It's obvious there's nothing else plugged into your exhaust.

You'd be looking at $100.00 plus for the new unit but. I replaced mine when I fitted the Pacies (the exhaust bloke who fitted my Lukies before that said she was stuffed). Didn't notice didly difference, but then I don't know how much LPG systems use the O2 sensor readings (but they definately do use them as the LPG controller computer thingo is taped into the o2 wires)...

My dual fuel Falcon runs rough on petrol but relatively smoothly on gas. I found the fuel filter was blocked. Fixed that (not without getting fuel in my eye!). Also ran Nulon fuel system cleaner through it. It goes a bit better but still rough.
It could be he O2 sensor, but the head gasket is also leaking. The rough idle has gotten worse as of late. Any suggestions? |

Just by one (NGK or Bosch) from Repco, Super Cheap etc. They are the same as the ones for use but Ford charge triple the price.

I heard the wires are just crimped, to the sensor or whatever, on the VN and VP's etc. And the electrical contact builds up impedance over time. This is probably why it made such a difference when he replaced it.
Anyone else hear this? |
