Whats the deal with these ELs? All I know is that 1998 model ELs are hybrids and they have some EL parts and go harder then normal ELs but I have some questions about them.
Are all '98 ELs hybrids? how can I tell a hybrid motor while im inspecting cars to buy? how much better performance than a non-hybrid EL? how much worse performance then '98 AU? Cheers,

Um
They were all the same as far as I was aware, SOHC inline six with 157kw and 357nm of torque. All the EL's/AU's I've driven have felt pretty well the same as far as grunt goes. Someone correct me if I'm wrong?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong? They arent the same, and one shouldn't post unless one is sure of what one is talking about. And you must have driven some funny ones, as each model engine feels and drives pretty different, specially the EL hybrids, you can easily tell the difference between a normal EL and a hybrid EL engine. And AU's are a different feeling all together. EL hybrids build date starts at 02/98 until the end of the EL life. To identify, either look at the complance plate build date. The block will be unpainted (ie rust colour by now) not black like previous models. The head will have a casting stamp of 96Dx (where x is A or T), unlike earlier models that have 94Dx or 95Dx. The crank is a EL/AU mixture. Pistons and rods are EL. But the head and cam are full AU spec. |

My car tended to rev alot smoother and easier to the redline...
Off the line I felt they werent as quick as the earlier model heads... But made more power in higher rpm. To the point where I would loose off the line for a car with 94DT head but catch up and beat it over the 1/4 mile. Highway fuel economy is awesome. Around town, I think it used a little more. |

Being that ARM79 lists 96DT as a possible part number for the hybrid head, I'd assume so!
