I don't know where this fits in because its about a VL turbo but since the principles can be applied to all piston engined cars i thought I'd post it up here.
My brother is thinking of porting the head in his VLT and a mate of ours reckons that for a good cheap job we should: 1. remove the inlet and exhaust manifold 2. Get some playdough on a string and stuff it down the ports 3. Open up the ports with a die grinder 4. when finished porting then pull on the string and as the playdough comes up all the metal shavings will come up with it and nothing will fall into the engine. 5. Bolt it all up and away you go. I don't know about you guys but that sounds like a pretty darn lazy (and bodgy) approach. To do a decent job I thought you always had to take the head off the car and dissassemble it so you can attack it from all angles. Not just the side of the head that mates to the manifold. I was thinking of working the turn in the port especially around the valve as I am led to belive that's where the most gains can be made. |

I figured that. All talk and no brains. Especially when he reckons he build a mates 700hp 350 chev for him. Every kid in dapto is like that. Same old bush mechnic mentallity and broken dreams.
The scary part is my brother actually believed him untill I sat him down and told him if he's going to port his head then he's going to have to do it properly and it will cost him a few $$$. 800 of which would get him something decent for a turbo'd car. |
