hi
i scored a 12" sub in a box and a rockford fosgate 200 w rms amp off a mate cheap. the amp looks pretty old (like a bbq grill) but sounds good. the problem is that after about 15 mins the amp gets that hot it cuts out. i mean that it gets that hot you could cook a sausage on it lol. also when the engine is runing its noisy like a whistle. i know you can get noise supressors. but if i cant fix the overheating problem i will get another amp. what would cause the amp to get that hot???????? |

the sub ur driving is a lower impedance then the amp can handle so it overheats, u have bad connections, or its just being driven 2 hard..., or its in an enclosed space. add some cooling fans, check everything and u shud be right.

ive tried checking all connections and they are all good.
the sub is evenly matched to the amp (200w rms) and sub(200w rms) the amp is screwed to the back of the sub box. and there is open space for the amp to breathe . any ideas?? ive tried everything i can think of......... |

You need to place the amp in a spot where it can a*** heat alot more so it can stay on for longer. Also buy a cpu fan or something for it to keep it cool. Or change the settings on the amp, you might have the sub gain set too high.
Try those out and see if any of it makes a difference.

the amp gain is on minimum.
so the only thing left is to use a fan or just chuck out the window lol. next question is will a cpu fan work on 12v or is there something else i need to cut the volts down ????? has anyone got pics of fans attached to their amps??.. |

they are 12V fans so they are a plug and play device

ITs not the power that you need to "match" the impedance or resistance needs to be high enough so that the amp isnt supplying too much current. If the amp is set to operate with a 4ohm sum and youve got a 2ohm sub( or a dual voice coil sub wired up in parallel to give 2ohm resistance) then the current draw will be too high and you will cook your amp. check this first. If you have a multimeter you can check the resistance by switching it to the ohms scale and puting the red probe in the positive side of the sub terminal and the black probe in the negative side (doesnt matter if you do it the other way round.) |

my guess would be the ohms. it has been hot latley my amp has heaps of air on both sides and it over heats sometimes but it sounds like amp is rooted

Well i know the sub is 4ohm and the amp has it written on the bottom
but i cant remember how many ohms it is . so tomorrow i will unscrew the amp and have a look.. otherwise i think i will be better off getting another amp as it really sucks only being able to listen to music in 20 minute intervals. |

no it will be 4ohm stable it might not evern be the amp if the voive coils on the sub is nacked then when they heat up it would short out and go in to protect mode i have had the same problem
