Any schools of thought on how often to change diff oil?.
I suspect it hasnt been done for 130K on my Futura - but cant be sure. Looks easy enough to do anyway.

It's probably specified in the log book at what intervals the final drive oil is changed. If i were a betting man (which i am), i'd wager that it hasnt been done for some time.
Not hard to do at all. Drain plug and a filler plug... follow your nose type job.

Is it the kind of thing you need to do regularly anyway? Seems to last a while.....must be tough stuff.

Nah, id say most cars only have it done a few times in their lifetime. Looking at about $20 of oil IIRC, had mine done about 18months ago.

Was hard to tell as i had trans serviced/flushed, new discs/pads all round etc etc and did a service on it all in the same day... So yeah, really just a piece of mind thing.

If the diff didn't rely on lubrucation, there wouldn't be any oil in there. So with that in mind, i'd be ensuring the oil is replaced at the receommended intervals just like any other lubricants and consumables in the vehicle.
This will preserve bearings and gears and will increase the life of LSD's!

You can get pump plungers that will screw on to oil containers in lieu of the original cap - you'll find this handy for filling diffs or gearboxes.

Generally, a gearbox like a diff requires an oil change every 2500 hours.
For the sake of $20 I'd be doing it every year. I've steered clear of it in my Falcons because my past experience with cars never had drain plugs on the diff and I've never looked at the Falcon diff. Knowing now that it's got a drain plug, I'll be doing mine yearly. Same thing goes for diffs as goes for engines and gearboxes... oil is cheaper than replacing any of them! |

The bottom bolt on the housing cover looks slightly different to the rest, thats the drain plug.
Did mine and put in some Penrite Limslip additive. The Diff does not seem to spin only one wheel anymore when turning. It is a LSD too. |
