Hey guys,
Being so poor has got me thinking of maybe, I stress maybe, selling my glorious Fairmont. I was just having a browse on carsales.com.au and found a 93 Ford Telstar Ghia. Now here's the specs on the engine: 6 cylinder U Multi-point injected 2.5L (2497cc) I was wondering would there be a large difference in fuel economy? It would have to be considerable for me to have to change. Would be a good buy I think, good looking car, luxury, and still in the blue oval family. http://www.carsales.com.au/pls/carsales/!cs_content.private_vehicle?vehicle_id=2833048¤t_rec=156&used_rec=145&total_rec=1000&sort_type=&total_rec=1000&sort_type=&price_max=7500&state_id=4&search_distance=25 Any more info on AX FORD TELSTAR GHIAs would be appreciated, thanks.

As far as I know the smaller 6's work pretty hard to go hence they still use quite a bit of petrol - especially at 215000kms... wouldn't get any better than 11 to the 100 surely?

They're not that great on petrol. They happily rev and are very smooth.. Only thing is, a lot of them have bad oil leaks that are costly to repair (a lot of engine out jobs).

Lets say your falcon uses 4 L/100k's more than some random small 4 banger.
That's about $4.80 (@1.20/litre) extra per 100k's. In a 20,000km year thats $960 a year extra to run the falcon compared to that very economical 1.5 litre mirage. Is that extra money worth the space, comfort, safety, performance and FM-respect that the Falcon is going to offer? Then factor in costs for repairs and services (with the wealth of knowledge here and with the right tools you could do a fair bit yourself) and the good ol' Falcon doesn't look so expensive for what it offers...

my experiance with them 2.5L V6's isnt good.. timing belts are costly coz theyre VERY Cramped.. and saw one that had been cooked when i worked for NRMA, recon heads and associated gaskets etc cost the guy $8.5K... recon motor would have been 11K

Dad has the 2.5L v6 tx5 ghia and it's not a bad car at all.
it genuinely beat an eb 5 litre fairmont one morning. they're not bad on fuel, but if they need mechanical work, look out as the motor is pretty crammed in there. I think he's looking at selling it too. cheers.

Think about the cost of repairs. Price a radiator for both, you will faint!! Oh yeah, the 2.5's love to s**t dissy's too, hope your Bankcard has got lots left on it.
I remember working on the TX5 V6's when they first came out, and the fun we had doing head modifications to stop the pistons hitting carbon build ups in the combustion chambers. At the time i thought, yeah, nice car, but I wouldn't want to own one when they get 8 - 10 years old.

it's a step step down. i went from a 93 Telstar to an XR6 and would never go back. Mine was a bit of a dud and cost me a lot of money because it's a b**ch to repair and everything costs a fortune to replace.
I was using the same or more petrol with the 93 Telstar as my current car and it in NO WAY handles or has the power .. obviously ... and you'll probably miss it especially going from a torquey fairmont The engine is incredibly cramped and to do any major work they need to take the entire engine out coz its so cramped. Reved nicely and all but I'd never purchase one again, if mine wasn't so dud who knows... |
