This is an issue that needs to be solved once and for all. Im sure they are an AU block, with an EL head, head studs and head gasket, AU Valve train, AU conical valve springs and a different crank (not AU or EL). This is from a trusted source (that actually works at Ford) and AFAIK is correct. The change was made to allow earlier changeover of many of the Geelong machining lines to AU spec. This is to the best of my knowledge but I'm happy to be proved wrong if somebody can offer substantial knowledge from a trustworthy source.

Having seen my head, and an EL head (resonably close together - across a garage) the hybrid is definately NOT EL spec. @ Jaysen's garage when he was installing my AU grind cam.

EL valves won't fit in an AU head (and vis a vis) cause the AU ones have a narrower stem and are angled differently for the 1.8:1 rocker ratio (E sereis have 2.0:1 ratio).

AU cam, rocker gear, valves & springs. None of it will go into an EL.

Having not pulled apart my bottom end, I can't comment on that.

I know the valve springs changed to the AU ones, and the valve stems (thinner) as well as the valve stem seals.

In regards to the block, I thought the custom crank was required to match the AU main bearings but also the EL big ends, so that EL conrods could still be used. If it was an EL block, and the only difference was the head, I cant see why the custom crank would have been required. The crank is apparently cast with the letters 'VR' in it, as opposed to a full AU spec that has 'WR' cast into it..

Will have to do some further investigation.

Fairly Certain that they have an AU block, because the sump will not fit an EL block.

i've put hybrid motor's into e-series cars before .

AU, the last so many months of EL production also featured a 'Hybrid' six with the AU block but with the EL pistons & conrods. This required a special crankshaft to be made (known internally as the 'VR' vs the AU's 'WR' spec crank) with the AU's larger main bearing surfaces but the EL's everything else. This engine also received the AU's low inertia valve train to boot - which helped to produce the most reliable and smooth running Falcon six cylinder made to that date.

Never said it would not fit in the car,

the physical sump on a hybrid will not bolt onto the block of a normal one.

Have a look here for info on the 'hybrid' http://www.trueblueford.com/ELengine.html

Also on that site - "keep your eyes peeled for roughly 20 or so EL GLi's, Futura's & Fairmonts fitted with XR6 engines (identified by a 'T' cast into the front of the cylinder head). Due to a prolonged breakdown at the Geelong engine plant, these engines were fitted out of sequence to avoid stopping the Broadmeadows assembly line."
