Hey lads looking at my zorst 2day, i followed the extractors down and just before the cat theres a spark plug looking sensor thing whats it called?

ive pulled it out and it looks fair caked in s**t would it be a good idear to give it a clean off with some throttle body cleaner?

Dont know if you should clean it can be damaged easily There are "Oxygen sensor safe" cleaners out there |

Heated exhaust gas oxygen sensor.... or HEGO...
Ive never cleaned one but what i used to read on the mustang forums is that you burn all the s**t off with a propane torch. I dont think you're supposed to use chemicals - at all!!

common sense would tell me this:
anything you put on the sensor, needs to be safe enough to put on a hot exhaust. cause that's where it's going to be! As 4.9 said, it's a sensor - if it senses a chemical it will give an incorrect reading. maybe a brush and some compressed air to blow the crap out of it?

o2 snesors opperate at around 600C, to 700C. so not much s**t builds up on them as it runs so hot. highly reconmend not cleaning it at all, even though it is black and looks dirty u will find it in good condition.
Bosh recomend replacing them every 100,000km. as they do wear out, and get slow. |

^ what these guys said. If you ever hook up a meter to a narrowband sensor, you can actually see how responsive it is (or otherwise). And you can also see the difference heat makes.
A decent stint at WOT usually burns all of the carbon off them and you'll see an amazing increase in the rate at which it switches around the stoich reading. Unfortunatley if its worn, the response time will go back to being sloppy fairly quick. You do not - I repeat - DO NOT - want to be doing anything to these things when the ignition is on. They heat themselves to operating temperature (this is self regulated by the changing resitance depending on the heat of the sensor).

yeah i wouldnt be putting carby cleaner on it lol, that stuff is falmable as, i was havin a ciggy while using that stuff cut a long story short there were flames everywhere after a while hehe

Hmm, I've used wax and grease remover (aka prepsol) on mine, cleaned it up and my running rich problem went away.
It's prob ~154000KM old, as I haven't replaced it.
